Looks like Alberta will surpass BC in the next decade as the gap has closed to only 500k.

Crazy, 40 years ago there was very little population difference between Calgary and Winnipeg.

Nice to see those population growth figures despite all the negativity the last year or so.

Lethbridge is going through the roof too. In a year or 2 they'll hit 100k and pass Red Deer.

That's so interesting... where are our new neighbours coming from? Seems like lots of people still aren't leaving town ... and I'm seeing more people my age and a few years older coming back from trying to live in Vancouver without it working out.

I point out to people who are younger or who moved to Calgary in the last 20 years how Canmore used to be a dying mining town like Blairmore or Sparwood, with dilapidated houses and a couple dive bars and greasy spoons. You could get a house there in the 80s for a song.

I doubt it. Red Deer's decrease is as much about people going to the satellite towns within 30km of it than leaving the area. When oil isn't busting the growth in Red Deer is upwards of 5%.

Really? I had no idea.
I've always liked Lethbridge.

Retirement capital of Alberta and one of the most boring cities in Canada. My dad and my wife's parents have moved down there over the last decade which sucks because I have to go down there after avoiding it for almost 15 years.

Sure, but that doesn't change the fact that the gap has closed from 9k difference, to 7k difference, now being only 3k behind in the 2016 municipal numbers. They will overtake eventually.

Back in 2000 Lethbridge was the larger of the two cities. How on Earth Did Red Deer not only surpass it but build up a 9000 resident lead?

Because Red Deer had a stupid amount of growth between 2000 and 2006.

Nope never will be. I would love it to because my father owns property there but it's too far from Calgary, has no amenities, run down, turns into a ghost town in the winter, etc. If you love snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, or skiing in Fernie it's all right but otherwise it's got nothing.
