Something's definitely got to give in Dallas... On their recent 4 game road trip they went 0-4. Might be too late even

To the bolded though, lol.
I wouldn't mind him being stuck to Brodie for the rest of the year, and if he can help Brodie at all I wouldn't be opposed to signing him to a 1 or 2 year deal. The Flames need a physical stop gap guy until they can acquire a legit top 4 guy, Hamilton develops a physical game, or a prospect comes through. Engelland has familiarity with the team, and has been non-garbage going on two seasons now.
|
Engelland's passing ability - yep, it isn't anywhere near Brodie, Hamilton and Giordano, but next game count the number of times he doesn't get the puck out. He seems really decent at getting the puck out of the zone and onto someone's stick (or close by anyways). I think he makes really good decisions with the puck, and doesn't cough it up or simply throw it away often at all. I didn't notice this myself until I started actively counting last season during a stretch of games, and found it quite surprising.
With that being said, I don't mean he makes awesome high-end blue-line to blue-line tape to tape passes. Simply that he gets it out without giving it away (as in an icing, or simply dumped-in off the boards into the neutral zone to relieve pressure) or coughing it up regularly.

The Dion comments are odd because I just read an article the other day where he got a lot of praise from players, the coach and GM.
http://www.cbc.ca/m/sports/hockey/nh...deal-1.3972508
"This trade for us was a bit more than hockey-related for us," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a recent interview. "Dion obviously has brought great leadership to our team, his influence on our younger players — how to be pros, how to approach games — has been a big factor, I think, in what we've done this year and what we're trying to accomplish moving forward."

In the second paragraph, do you mean he doesn't do many dump-outs or icings? Because in my viewings he very rarely (even for a bottom pairing guy) gets the puck out of the zone and into transition. Usually it's dump-and-change.
Also, regarding Stone. The worst team in the league (i.e. a team that could really use some good defensemen) didn't want to go long term with this guy last year after putting up 0.5 PPG playing on the first pairing with OEL and instead they signed him to a 1 year deal. Maybe he's the next Petry, but I couldn't know for sure now. I'll have to suffer through some Coyotes games to see what he's like.
He is playing with Goligoski this year, who is a significant downgrade from OEL and his potential partner in Brodie, which does negatively skew his performance. He's never been any good defensively, but last year he was able to outscore his problems. I think if he was signed he'd ultimately underwhelm, like most FA's, but he should be a capable enough #4 if Brodie wasn't just a product of Gio (and oh boy, if that's true we can kiss this rebuild goodbye). Managing the cap to fit him might be hard but if Brouwer can be expansion'd it could open up space for a solid #4.

He's dead last in how he is deployed compared to his teammates? That doesn't even make sense. You do know what deployed means, right?

I like Engelland a lot, but he regularly passes the puck right into traffic along the boards in an attempt to do a dump out. He and whoever his partner of the night is regularly get trapped. His transition passes might just be the worst on the team. It's probably his worst trait (I hate his washerwoman move that he uses a lot on the pk, but it seems to work OK).

I don't have any reason to believe that a defenseman will magically be better just because they are playing for the Flames. He's playing for Dave Tippett not Dallas Eakins. Chances are he's only marginally better than he's showed in Phoenix at best and I don't think that's enough to warrant free agent money. There is the Phoenix connection for Treliving so I don't think you can rule it out but I wouldn't overpay for this guy and that's what free agency is all about see Troy Brouwer.

Friedman on 960 says that if he was McPhee he would definitely pick up Giordano if he was exposed in the expansion draft. Also said he doesn't see the Flames exposing Giordano.
Thinks Brouwer is a safer bet to be exposed than Giordano when it is asked by Molberg about potentially exposing Brouwer.

I have no idea why Boomer has it in his head that the Flames would expose Giordano - just crazy talk IMO

I agree that exposing Gio wouldn't be the most ideal. If management wanted to get rid of him, I"m sure he'd have value on the trade market. I do think they'll expose Brower but I don't think he'll get claimed.

You can see he has lost a step and that contract is an anchor.

Friedman also claimed that Brouwer was not a McPhee move in Washington but I am fairly certain that McPhee did acquire Brouwer and it was Maclellen that moved him for Oshie

With the trade dead line just around the corner and the Flames entering a crucial part of season, fighting for a playoff spot. Do we run with Elliott and Johnson or do we look for someone else. By someone else, I mean who can be part of this team long term or do we wait for the off season for that?
