Both the Oilers and Sharks really solidified their goaltending through trades, but gave up meaningful draft picks. Should Flames go the same route? Would anyone be happy losing a 1st rounder or multiple 2nd rounders to get another team's up and coming backup?

Oilers and Sharks have no regrets. I guess we tried this in a half assed way with Elliott but whiffed.

Which goalie would you target?

Beside the trade, you'll need to have this new number one goalie under contract for at least 4 years if you are giving up a 1st or multiple 2nd round picks.

I'm not disagreeing with the thought just curious if you have a candidate or two that you think fit into this scenario.

I don't know who would be best on the Flames, but at some point in the season Rittich should get a good look. He is only signed for this season, and I think it would be worthwhile to see what the Flames have in him before figuring out if he deserves another contract.

It may be crazy, but I suspect Cory Schneider might be available.

NJ is clearly beginning a rebuild and I suspect Cory is not too pleased about spending his peak years on a bottom feeder. While Calgary isn't a league leader, we do have enough potential to be appealing for some.

Acquisition cost is another story...

More realistically though...
-Bishop if he will sign around $5M per
-Pickard in Colorado
-Mrazek in Detroit

Some options...

I have been impressed with Pickard. He got shelled in a few games against the Flames and really fought hard despite the team in front of him mailing things in. Stats don't look great but in front of a better team he may be decent.

Mrazek, Bishop or Varalmov(if we can get him with 50% retained) would be good options because they won't cost too much. Schneider Would be good but would cost a arm and a leg.

I don't think it matters which goalie we get, we need a new goalie coach first.

Am I the only one that doesn't want Bishop?

The guy screams Elliott 2.0, but 4 millions dollars more expensive. :/

Pickard and Mrazek are interesting options. Would two 2nds get you Pickard?

I am still good with MAF for 2 years at his current salary. His acquisition cost should be low if he's willing.

What about Korpisalo from CBJ? Looking at his stats this year, I will admit they aren't the best. I can't help but feel he could be had for cheap with the expansion draft looming I can't imagine that the jackets would expose Bobrovksy. It wasn't too long ago he was considered one of the top young goalie prospects. Might be a similar situation with Mrazek but I have a soft spot for Finnish goalies.

Bishop has certainly proven more as a starter...for one he has proven he is one

Is it horrible of me to secretly want Elliott to miss some time so Rittich can get called up and play a few games. You know just a minor injury like a glorified leg cramp or something.

Or we could just deal Elliott at the deadline and call him up... either or.

Does anyone think Lundqvist will be available? He's been out-performed by Raanta this season, and is being paid 8x as much. The Rangers can only protect 1 of these 2 in the upcoming expansion draft, and Raanta would almost assuredly be claimed by Vegas if left exposed.

Would Lundqvist be a fit on the Flames? He'll be 35 in a month, and still has 4yrs remaining @ $8.5M. That's a pretty scary contract, given his age, but we've seen elite goaltenders maintain their play until their late 30s before (Luongo is 37).

I'd be more comfortable with a 35yo Lundqvist @ $8.5M for 4 years, than today's MAF @ $5.75M for 2 years. Just say no to Fleury.

If I was a GM I wouldn't have the balls to pick up that contract regardless of the name. The chances of that $8.5ml turning to mediocre or terrible in the 35-39 year old range is extremely high.

That's crazy scary to take on if he falls off. That would basically destroy a team and stop a contending build dead in it's tracks. Way too much risk, imo.

Rask or Schneider. Otherwise I'd re-sign our current guys at a similar price. I just don't see either guy being any worse than last season and it's not worth spending assets on another project.

Would also look at Mrazek but can't see us paying Detroit's price.

I'd rather have Raanta.

I have this irrational, nagging fear now of Elliot going on a run to close out the season and being signed to a multi-year.

It's been such a frustrating position for us since the departure of Kipper.
