How would Brodie fit with a signed Shattenkirk? That would be a dynamic combo. One can only dream given we can't afford it.

Deryk Engelland deserves a promotion and should be moved up and given a shot. it's that simple in my opinion. "Demote" and shelter Wideman, or sit him altogether, at least for a few games, and see what the farm can do for us.
It seems so spectacularly easy to me that I just can't fathom why it's not being done.

I would love to see Brodie with Engelland as well. Allow Brodie to do more of his rover thing and Engelland play more stay at home. But I think they would compliment each other.
I wonder how much of forcing Wideman on that 2nd pair was in hoipes to showcase him more than anything. Clearly its not working if thats the case so other than having a $5+mi guy playing 3rd pairing minutes, im not sure why they having bumped Wideman down and gotten him away from Brodie.

So, we are vastly overpaying him on the third line. We're paying him either way. He might even prove somewhat useful on a third pairing with sheltered minutes. It's not ideal of course, but....

I'm not quite sure what your point is..
I'm saying there maybe other reasons why he hasnt been bumped down to the 3rd pairing.

Basically agreeing with you in that it seems some of the objection to moving Wideman down is paying that salary for a third pairing D but that needs to be ignored; suck it up and (vastly) overpay him to play on the 3rd. again, it seems so simple. Painful, but simple.
I don't know what other reasons there could possibly be. "Showcasing" him is failing if that's the plan!

4 assists playing left side. Looks like Brodie is just fine playing the left side.

Engelland is having a great season but hes a bottom pairing defender, he wont be much different than wideman who is also a bottom pairing defender.
I would rather keep engelland where he is looking great than saddle him with Brodie and bring his stock down.

You might be right, but there's only one way to find out. I think he has at least made a case for himself to try him on the second pairing. He has worked really hard and looked pretty good. If it doesn't work out then we've lost nothing, but not trying it is silly to me.

3 of those 4 assists came off his stick when he had moved over to the right side of the ice

And in other news water is wet (probably already got said, late to the party). Other posters have also mentioned the lack of assets the Flames have to deal compared to other teams. Our farm system is not as dry as it once was but the Flames still are not in a place to get rid of prospects with legit value like Rasmus, Kylington, and Jankowski. The players that have value on the big club probably aren't going anywhere, we aren't going to trade anyone in our top 6 either. Leaves not much to deal with unless picks are involved, and a team still building should not give away picks unless it's like the Dougie deal. Flames just can't compete with what contenders, who are in win a cup now mode, will be willing to dish out at the deadline. We can't mortgage our future, other teams can.

But not on the backhand, which is why a lot of people said he should be on the right.

I doubt they are playing him on the 2nd pairing to "show case" him. The problem is Joki and Kulak really have not been any better than Wideman. I can't see either of those 2 playing on the 2nd pairing for rest of season. Wideman with Engeland is to slow. There is no chance that Joki or Kulak can make up for Widemans short comings, so you can't put them as a pair. Maybe Wideman to pressbox and Joki and Kulak together? Granted i don't see that going well for an extended period of time. Don't think anybody on the farm is ready for top 4 minutes.
The sad part for flames right now is Brodie has to suck it up and play with Wideman for the near future. Flames have one legit bottom pairing d-man ( Engeland) and 3,# 6/7 dmen in Wideman , Kulak and Joki. They really don't even have a legit bottom pairing partner for Engelland either. If we should be really mad its that Kulak and Joki have not seazed the moment, because they had a great opportunity to be given 2nd pairing minutes.

True, but I don't subscribe to the thought of the backhand is what made him so successful there. I think he's simply more comfortable playing the off side and he uses the angles to his advantage

Wideman really stepped up at that time too. I agree that Engelland should be moved up and Wideman is having a terrible season but he was once pretty good for us.

I don't mind seeing what Engelland can do with more minutes.
I don't think Wideman hurts the bottom pairing either. He's better at puck moving than anyone on the bottom now, and provides more offence when they do get into the offensive zone. Right now, a pass to the third pairing point is pretty wasted.
