That would be a low point in franchise history if this team grabbed Ribeiro. They better not.

We've had this discussion multiple times before on CP. High profile athletes are more likely to be accused of things such as this because of money.

The lawsuit ended in a settlement. For all we know the girl was lying and the Ribeiro side settled for cheaper than it would have been to defend. Or there wasn't enough evidence on their side. Or he did indeed sexually assault her. Either way, we don't know based on the information given.

Plenty of good hockey players do plenty of ####ty things. We don't know for sure if he's one of them.
I respect the presumption of innocence with respect to criminal charges but a finding that someone has not been proved beyond a reasonable doubt to be guilty of a crime or has chosen to settle a lawsuit rather than proceed to trial certainly does not mean the alleged events did not take place, nor does it shield the person accused from public scrutiny.

Moreover, I really dislike the suggestion that young wealthy male sports stars are victims of false accusations. The accused in this case gave a sworn statement that she was sexually assaulted both before and after the age of 18. Her statement also is entitled to the presumption of truth. Rather than challenge her version of events, Ribeiro elected to settle. I am quite comfortable in drawing an inference that the incidents that were alleged took place. The only realistic mitigating factor is that his egregious behaviour was influenced by an addiction which if resolved may entitle him to a second chance. You'd be a fool not to at least be curious about why the Predators would now cut bait. It doesn't seem to be a hockey-based decision.

^To be fair the law suit was filed and made public while Ribeiro was negotiating a new contract with the Predators, (which was probably good strategy by the girl's lawyers). He had a lot of incentive to settle the law suit as it was impacting his multi million dollar contract talks whether the allegations were true or not.

Doesn't make the allegations any less disgusting though, and I hope some kind of comeuppance is coming his way if true.

And how quickly some fans forget, the impetus for Doug Gilmour's trade to Calgary were similar allegations, yet some still revere him as one of the greatest to wear the flaming C despite those allegations.

Is that a fact? Prove it.

Yeah I'd forgotten about the allegations against Ribeiro. I want no part of him here.

Marchenko, though... sure.

Ribeiro must be a real #######. He's always been productive but everyone who has him is always desperate to get rid of him.

Thanks for this insight.

Well Conroy did say we might be looking at a center... He's 1.05 mill, a UFA, had a 63 point season under Gulutzan... Maybe we claim him??

Bennett - Riberio - Versteeg could do someone damage offensively and the guy does have 21 assists so far.

When did Conroy say that? I missed this.

Millions said that maybe we might be looking at a center and/or a d-man and if he was close on that assumption and Conroy said he might be getting warmer, round about way of saying a center might be considered.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
TOR claims Marchenko

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Ribeiro clears. Corrado on waivers

Toronto had a lower waiver priority than the Flames, so the Flames didn't put a claim in on either.

Mike Ribeiro, when he learned that he wasn't claimed:

Hmmm. Is Corrado better than Wideman?

The better question is: is Corrado better than Wotherspoon (or Kulak)?

And the answer to that is no IMO.

Corrado is not an upgrade on Jokipakka or Kulak, and both of those guys are upgrades on Wotherspoon, so I wouldn't claim him.

One reason we should have claimed Marchenko

@reporterchris
Of note on Alexey Marchenko: He already meets the 40/70 requirements for exposure in the expansion draft. More flexibility for #leafs.

Is there some reason why they haven't called up Andersson to see what he can do at the NHL level for a few games? Not ready? I'd like to see if he can bring more to the table than Jokipakka, Wotherspoon or Kulak.

The Flames only have one guy who meets this requirement. Jyrki Jokipakka. So they sort of need to sign him to an extension.

They have 3 unsigned guys that meet the requirement. Jokipakka, Wideman, and Engelland.

Jokipakka will likely re-sign for a lower cap hit than Marchenko's 1.45 mil though.
