This is a wise move for McPhee. He will need to build that team through the entry draft - not the expansion draft.

Friedman's 30 thoughts:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...offers-bishop/
Lost in the AllStar weekend was that the salary cap is expected to remain flat next season.
Some chatter starting about Patrik Berglund, but the Blues might wait and see how he does under Yeo.
Word is current offers for Bishop are low and Yzerman isn't biting.
Sabres pending UFA Dmitry Kulikov is reportedly available
Unusual amount of scouting going on with KHL players - NHL clubs getting ready for the possibility of players coming over. Dadonov and Shipachev will cost millions to come to NA

I could see the Blues being buyers, they are close enough in the playoff chase...but...the Coyotes would have to overpay to get an upgrade, and have two chances at the playoffs, slim, and none!

Would Kulikov be an option as the #4 guy in Calgary?

Taking a while to get to 5000

If he could be had at a moderate pay raise, sure. Thats the problem. $22M to spend next year and the team needs a top 6 wing, 2nd pairing D, and likely a new starting goalie. Plus they have to flesh out the roster with 7 other players.
Free agency will be difficult unless they move a contract like Bouma or Stajan. Not impossible, just difficult.
Edit: I am referring to off season moves and nothing this season

Well the TSN guys didn't say they were rental buyers... more of a comment that they would be interested in Duchene, who isn't a rental.
And the Coyotes certainly do have a lot of quality prospects and young players that could be of interest to the Avs.

What trips a red flag for me is that the Sabres have been looking for a LHD top 4 d-man all season long, but are ready to move on from Kulikov....
Not sure if the injury and/or contract demands are scaring them off.

Wouldn't the flames be better off riding this year out in regard to the blue line? They have a pretty clear expansion draft strategy; protect Hamilton, Brodie, Gio. Look for no. 4 afterwards.
If anything, they should sell high on engelland at the deadline. He would be a solid depth D add for a playoff bound team & an opportunity for the flames to add some draft picks.

He's an upgrade on Wideman, that's for sure.
Kulikov is a solid option on any team's 2nd pair. He has some offensive abilities (although they've all but disappeared this year), he can skate decently, he's physical enough when he needs to be, and there are times where he can be a positive difference maker in the game.
However...even though he's just 26, after all his years in the NHL (8) he still makes questionable decisions when reading the play, leading to odd-man rushes the other way. He's improved on this problem over the years, but it still happens often enough to be noticeable.
He's making $4.5 M this year and is reportedly looking for a raise, so at least $5 M to start in free agency negotiations.
So he would basically be a younger, faster Wideman.

For capspace reasons, I really think the flames need to fill that #4 spot with entry level contracts over the next few years. Obviously easier said than done, but would like to see what Kulak and Brodie look like together post trade deadline. Maybe in two years one of Anderson or Kylington pan out.

Of course it's by no means something to count on... but I think if anyone's ready to surprise it could be Rasmus Andersson. He seemed to get a long look in camp last year and then has gone on to be very good in the AHL this year.
Would be great to see someone like him make the leap and be a steady young player for us on the backend.

Sureloss, would it behoove the Dogs to get into a bidding war with a contender? I still think that draft packages/prospect offers from teams that are playoff bound would be beyond what the Dogs would be willing to give up.

Well unlike most contenders the Coyotes don't need to send salary back to the Avalanche to get and keep Duchene long term.
That in itself has value to the Avalanche, if they can get similar prospects from the Coyotes and not have to take cap dumps back... why couldn't the Coyotes be in on Duchene?

The Coyotes will also have the jump on any contender with the quality of what they can offer when it comes to picks. That also means the Coyotes might want to think long and hard about moving those picks, but the Coyotes shouldn't have to offer as "many" picks to get it done, because the picks they will be offering will have more appeal than what a contender offers.
If I was the Avs, I'd be more motivated to get the higher pick from the Yotes, then a larger volume of mediocre picks from a contender.

I would take Alzner over Kulikov. I would fill that bottom pairing with guys in the system or cheap UFAs, such as M. Stone or Engelland on a home-town discount.
But after carrying Smid, Engelland, Jokipakka/Nakladal for 6-7 million on the bottom pairing, I don't think the Flames have the appetit to do it again.
Giordano - Hamilton
Alzner - Brodie
Kylington - Andersson
Engelland

I wonder if Alzner is a pipe dream? I mean, is there a better Dman available as a UFA? (arguably shattenkirk but completely different type of player)
Alzner is going to be 29, on pace for a career year and going to want to get paid and perhaps his last contract.
And keep in mind it's silly season so he is gonna get PAID!
I can't see the Flames bringing him on without making some tough choices.

I really don't see Alzner getting to free agency. They've been nothing but happy with him for the majority of his career there. I think they'll have to make some tough decisions amongst their forward ranks.
