It was reassuring, amid the maelstrom of bad news, that the House of Commons returned from its Christmas break to debate amendments to the Statistics Act. Sometimes this flawed but precious institution can make you very proud indeed.
Canadians woke up to headlines about the shooting in Quebec City after a weekend of anxiety following Donald Trump’s executive order banning travellers from seven Muslim countries from crossing America’s borders.
A deep sense of discord gripped the country, and people looked to Parliament Hill to provide ballast. On Monday the leaders of our political parties did not disappoint, providing the stability and reassurance Canadians sought.
The House of Commons is the umbilical link between the people and actions of the state. On its best days, Parliament acts as a mirror on the nation, verbalizing how the country feels on any given issue.
He was arrested and detained for hours because police thought he was involved in the deadly shooting at a Quebec City mosque Sunday night.
It turned out that Mohamed Belkhadir, an engineering student at Laval University, was just a witness to the attack that left six people dead — men he called his brothers — and injured 19 others.
Like the victims, Belkhadir was at the mosque for evening prayers. He had left the building and was clearing snow off the stairs outside when he heard the gunshots.
His instinct was to hide. When the noises stopped, he called 911, then he went inside the mosque to see if anyone was still alive.
"I found someone near the door," he told Radio-Canada. "I didn't know if he was dead or not. I saw another person who was breathing, and I gave him my coat. As I was doing that, I saw a person carrying a weapon."

"Wait... it WASN'T a muslim? That's clearly impossible. Must be some sort of cover up." Sigh.
That said, did we ever figure out why they thought there were two shooters in ski masks? Was it just confusion on the part of a bunch of people running for their lives? I suppose I should say "have we yet" rather than "did we ever", it's only been a couple of days... part of the problem with the instantaneous news reporting is that it creates both immediate confusion and the expectation that you'll have immediate information to resolve that confusion.

Probably confusion. There were similar reports that came out after Orlando if you remember and that led to infowars crowd popping up with their false flag nonsense.
I read the comments over at the Rebel for the first time ever regarding this situation. I was completely awestruck, hundreds of posts believing that this was orchestrated by either the government or "the Muslims" and that Bisonnette is a patsie.
The few rational comments of far-right supporters trying to 'distance' themselves from Bisonette (for lack of better phrasing) were drowned out by conspiracy idiots.

Eye witnesses aren't great at the best of time. Throw in an active shooter and running for your lives and it's almost impossible to get an accurate account from them. I mean, a person wearing a hat in the winter is pretty common, it doesn't take much for it to get distorted into a ski-mask while already in flight or fight mode. Just like how the witness thought the police was another shooter himself.
It could also be a failure on the media. Who knows how many people said they only saw one gunner or weren't sure how many. If the media knew that there were two suspects in custody, finding that one person who "saw" two would actually seem like the most credible witness.

Totally. This is what I think probably happened... incidentally everyone should watch this talk, it's fantastic.

I don't remember anything about multiple shooters after Orlando... we basically just got more detail about Mateen as things went along. But here, you actually had police giving a press conference suggesting something totally contrary to what apparently actually happened, which caused some issues, because it's extremely hard to walk back someone's impression of an event, especially if the truth takes a while to come out. People often don't even see the correction.
It'd be good, if we actually are at a point where clear facts are available, for someone in an official capacity to come out and give the public a clear "here's what went down" timeline of events just to resolve any confusion. There are still going to be devotees of Levant who will call it all lies and a cover up but I think for the average person it'd be useful. But maybe that clarity just doesn't exist yet.

Police were probably really nervous at the time and didn't take any chances. I don't think it is unheard of for potential suspects to be downgraded to witnesses in the early stages when events are unfolding.

Same thing happened at the Parliament shooting in Ottawa, I believe. Initial reports had a second gunman still on the loose. I think it is just due to a ton of confusion with people running everywhere.

Of course. But I think you misunderstood my post, it wasn't very clear.
The second witness thought a police officer was a shooter (he saw the gun and ran) which is what I was talking about. Of course him running made the police think he was a shooter as well. Hence the confusion there.
The media still reported that witnesses saw two shooters, which presumably, had to do with two suspects being in custody at the time.
