I bet that if that if this were to occur, both teams would sell out 90% of their games.

Is Houston still an option? The Toyota Center seats 17,800 for hockey.

Just based off of the sizing of those concourse renderings, they're anticipating about 1000 people per night. I could almost lay across it and touch both sides.

So the expansion cousin Atlanta Flames and New York Islanders join the league.

Flames leave Atlanta
WHA merger add Hartford, Quebec and Winnipeg.
Flames leave Atlanta for Calgary.
Quebec move to Colorado
Winnipeg move to Phoenix
Hartford moves to Carolina.
Atlanta gets expansion team
Atlanta moves to Winnipeg
Carolina move to Quebec

So Islanders move to Hartford, and Phoenix eventually move to New York Island. Atlanta gets another expansion team that eventually moves to Phoenix?

I don't believe there's anyone here interested in bringing an NHL team to town. Sadly I don't think an NHL team would be successful here at all. A very large diverse population but not a hockey crowd. Wish I was wrong.

I heard Barclays sucked for hockey. Like Lyle Lovett dumping Julia Roberts.

Didn't Les Alexander insist that the Toyota centre was NHL standard before it was built? I always thought he had an affinity for the NHL.

Left field suggestion: Portland

Moda Center is a fairly modern facility, hosting the Trail Blazers and home of the WHL Winter Hawks.

Not suggesting nor championing it, but looking at its plausability.

I'd love if they moved to Portland.

it would help balance travel.

I get the feeling the NHL would prefer Seattle first but if a team in Seattle was ever successful, Portland would be a logical landing spot for a team.

There was some speculation about it once but I don't recall it being confirmed. And that was quite some time ago. He has the money for it but he was instrumental in the Aeros leaving. He didn't like that the Toyota Center was used by the Aeros for so many nights when there could be concerts etc.

I just don't see it but Toyota Center can definitely accommodate NHL.

From ESPN (http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=2...518799223527-4)...
Quote:
Here's a statement from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, regarding the Islanders potentially returning to the Nassau Coliseum: "I have met with both Barclays and the Islanders and strongly believe there is a path for the Islanders to return to the New Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum where the best sight lines in NHL remain, improved attractive facilities for fans and athletes and room to add seats to accommodate the Islanders. While the decision remains with the Islanders we believe Long Island fans will make the Islanders successful in the New Coliseum."

I really can't see the NHL moving the Isles... it would reflect extremely poorly if every other major sports league (even MLS) manages to have 2 teams in NYC and the NHL can't.

I don't think the league would let the Islanders leave NY with their history and that market. NY is the biggest hockey market in the US and the people will fill a building if they are winning. The Islanders issue isn't a market issue, its an organizational issue. Unfortunately for a few decades now the organization has been a laughing stock and they have been playing in the worst facilities in the league. Not even Canadian markets could endure what Islanders fans have had to endure for over the decades as it's akin to 20 years of young guns hockey and mickey mouse management. It's only a matter of getting a decent building and perennial solid product and they will come.

The NFL doesn't have a team in NYC.

I don't think there's any chance that the Islanders will be leaving NY, but the NHL has 3 teams in the NYC metro area, which is already more than every other league.

Both the New York Giants and New York Jets play out of East Rutherford, New Jersey. If they count as NYC teams, so do the New Jersey Devils.

The problem for many years has been that there were enough hockey fans (and luxury box tenants) to support two teams in New York… but the league had three.
