Well maybe you shouldn't have brought him up? Good lord.

Anyway, you can make that point about horrible linemates with anyone. Hey, Mats Sundin played with Jonas Hoglund and Todd Warriner and Kyle Wellwood and Alex Suglobov! He's just like Iginla!

Yeah, the way to figure it out is to look from the top down, not the down up.

Iggy playing with a couple good players at a time does not a stacked team make.
Compare to say, the Blackhawks that had, at material times, two or three elite forwards, another two or three very good ones, an elite defenceman, plus a very strong supporting cast, and a good goalie. Or the 70s Habs that had HOFers throughout. Or the late 80s Oilers (or Flames). Those teams were stacked.

The one thing about Hamrlik is that he got the best play out of Dion Phaneuf for some reason.

I think that had more to do with the high of being a rookie. Phaneuf came out guns blazing.
I agree Hamrlik was a steady presence as his partner just don't think he was a huge part in his early success.

Yeah but none of them belong to the yesteryear club. The NHL is an old boys club who refuses to live in the present when it comes to these sorts of things. Never mind the fact that the game and players today are far superior to the "good old days". Or the fact that more teams means a more competitive league. The old boys will always rule in the eyes of the NHL.
That and Canadian ancestry. Malkin will never receive the recognition he deserves because of his nationality.

looking at that selection panel, several players born in the 1960s coincidence I'm sure?

Yeah, you know their must be a serious problem with that list if only one player born in the 1970's is on it. Maybe Iginla doesn't deserve to be on the list (I don't know, I haven't thought about too much), but seriously only one guy from the 1970's deserved to be on the list??? Hard to believe.

There weren't too many Canadian born players from the era that were deserving, Iginla and Thornton are the only two that come to mind. It was back in 1998 when Canada came in fourth at the Olympics, 8th at the World Juniors and was awful at the World Championships as well that there was the big investigation into Hockey Canada. After that there was a much bigger emphasis on skills and developing players and I think we are seeing the benefits of that change now.

Malkin, Iginla, Thornton and Belfour were snubbed.
I just hate Jonathan Toews more and more with the hero worship he gets.

while for sure that was a relative dry spell I think those players (1970s cohort) also struggle from the offensive era that the NHL was under when they were in their scoring primes. no way a country can go from producing 15 top 100 forwards in one period (56-69) to zero in a comparable period (74-86)
sure Bossy, Messier, Trottier, Gretzky, Lemieux and a couple of others are all time greats, but there were Gartner, Nieuwendyk, Oates level players in the next 20 years

Pick someone not named Bob Gainey, the guy was one of the most complete players to ever put skates on.

Players who have scored more goals than Iginla based on Hockey Reference Adjusted Goals (admittedly imperfect, but helpful in levelling the playing field):
Howe
Jagr
Gretzky
Selanne
Hull
That's it, that's the list. Then Iginla.
Everyone on that list down to #19 (Andreychuk) made the top 100.

Gainey was an excellent player and worthy of being in the HHOF. But not close to the guys I referenced IMO. He was an elite defensive forward but never got a sniff of the Hart trophy.

Meh...lists like this are, of course, completely subjective...and guys that the NHL wants to market get extra consideration, as do guys that are "lifetime members of the "old boy's club""...this fan just shrugs, and moves on...
