We need a strong top four which means acquiring a another top four defender, not paying someone who can't do it less money and then being okay with it.
We're trying to become a contender here, not an okay team.
So should we change our rebuild motto to "lowered expectations"?

I meant use him as a stop gap if we can't find a better option in FA or Andersson and OK show they're not ready, not as a permanent solution or even a primary one.
Anyway, this was all based on a hypothetical situation in which we trade Brodie and sign Alzner. Personally, I feel more comfortable penciling Wideman in that #4 slot than RA or OK.

Dennis Wideman has somehow become one of the most over rated players on this team. Improved his defensive game from atrocious to adequate , while being useless offensively and our slowest player. Absolutely no reason for him to be a member of this team next year.

Yes. Even if you want to argue he is good value at $800K/year, the team simply needs to move on and get some fresh faces on the back end. Preferably guys that have a chance of improving, vs. declining.

After looking at the TSN's trade bait webpage:
http://www.tsn.ca/tsn-hockey-s-trade-bait-list-1.203546
I have a couple of comments/questions. First how good is this source for predicting players who are likely to be traded? can anyone recommend a better site?
Second, the list of RW's on the list is pretty grim. I reckon that the Flames wont improve that position much at the deadline. I would imagine that most "Trade bait" players are too old or are to great a cap hit.
Third, is Lazar worth the effort as a reclamation project for cheap. My guess is no, but would it be worth a 5th or 6th pick to try?
Lastly, should we consider the Flames as 'sellers' who are going to stick to the long term plan for next year?

He's a LW, but IIRC from HF, he played a lot on RW.
Gio - Hamilton
Alzner - Wideman
Wideman in the top 4 is not ideal, but he's that THAT BAD. But in an ideal world one of Andersson/OK takes that spot. Or we could go the FA route and pick up cheap offensive d-man.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Landeskog
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Bennett - Brouwer
Not saying I would do it, losing Brodie would suck, but it is an interesting idean.

No, I think signing Alzner would be to fill the gap they have in their top-4 right now. Trading Brodie for Landeskog would mean the gap in their top-4 is still there. Wideman can play on my bottom pairing but I don't think he's a capable top-4 guy anymore.

Taylor Hall got Adam Larsson
Brodie > Larsson
Hall > Landeskog
Avs would have to add.

It has been suggested to me from a few people up here that many of Hall's teammates suggested Hall needed to go at the year end meetings.
Hall comes with a lot of baggage

Could see the Hawks pay a big price to get the Avs to also retain some salary.
....wouldn't that be just swell

Here's the Flames schedule before the deadline:
-- Wild
-- Devils
-- Rangers
-- Penguins
-- Coyotes
-- Flyers
-- Canucks
-- Predators
-- Lightning
-- Panthers
-- Hurricanes
-- Kings
This is the perfect test for the Flames going into the deadline since all (except Yotes) are playoff calibre teams. Either the Flames flop and become sellers, or they push to keep their WC spot.

I hope they sell at least a couple assets no matter what happens.
Treliving's finest hour was the trade deadline where while still in the race he moved Glencross as a rental for a 2nd and a 3rd.
One of the few times in recent years I really felt like the Flames won a trade outright with a couple other exceptions and not something you see often, but a brilliant move.
If Wideman, Elliott or Versteeg bring back anything noteworthy of value, they should be moved in my opinion.

Agreed. The reality of the Flames position is if they lose the majority of their games before the deadline, which isn't unrealistic given that it's against tough competitors, they could fall behind Winnipeg and New Jersey for 28th place in the league. There is only 4 points separating the 28th place team and the 16th place team in the NHL, and the Flames (currently sitting 17th) are among 3 teams with the most games in hand.
Treliving is undoubtedly aware of this fact and certainly won't take poorly calculated risks. And like you said, it's not like he's afraid to sell even if he's in the mix of it. With the expansion looming, I could see him thinking beyond this season and trying to take advantage of vulnerable teams moreso than capitalizing on the Flames currently inflated position in the standings

If you actually break this down I would consider this a weaker schedule rather than tougher. Devils and Yotes are both in the bottom 3 teams in the league. Only 3 top 10 teams in the NHL in the next 12 games. All coming in the next 4. If the flames don't get beat up in the next 4 they could be looking at a push at the playoffs rather than the flop
Even if they do make a push I think they still consider selling at the deadline. But my fear is BT is fighting for his job and playoffs is the mandate

Wow... Avs would have to add to Landeakog to get Brodie? What are you guys smoking?
I like Brodie, but you guys have him as a #1 Dman who isn't even top 2 on our own team..

Even at the All Star game this year it didn't seem like very many players were interested in being chummy with Hall. It seems as though he is a tough guy to like and get along with. At the ASG most of the players of chatting, joking around and just having a good time but Hall was always just kind of off to the side and isolated.
I truly believe that Edmonton could have turned around their rebuild much sooner if they got rid of Hall earlier. They may have even pulled off a better trade for Hall a couple years sooner.

I would be very surprised if Wideman plays in the NHL next year. He may get a PTO in camp but won't sign with whichever teams sends him a bone for that PTO.
