God no. Fleury is rapidly declining and that contract is terrible. I think he would block it anyhow, his best interest is to force a buyout at the end of the year.

So we're actually putting ourselves in a terrible cap position and rushing to get rid of Gio way before we should even think about doing that.
I really don't think its a good deal at all for the Flames, I actually think it would be incredibly damaging for no real benefits.
Plus I tend to think that if we put Gio on the open market, we'd probably get a better package elsewhere.

Fleury is having an off year this season but look at the last several years. This is not a goalie that has been getting worse for a while now

Because Fleury will be in a contract year next season and guaranteed he'd rather play as a starter then as a backup for the sake of his next contract. Jim Rutherford will be motivated to make a deal as well because he's running out of time and options and Fleury holds all the cards. The last thing Rutherford will want to do is to buyout Fleury or lose Matt Murray in the expansion draft.

At one point I would have been interested in Fleury, but now I think there will be a few younger goalie options available on the trade market. I would look at Mrazek or Grubauer before I would target Fleury or Bishop.
I guess if you think Fleury can help us make the playoffs this year, you make the trade, but then we might miss out on the better goalie options.

I think he's another Elliot, but he comes with two more years.
No thanks, rather not go down this road again.

I think Pitts would have to add more than a 3rd for this to happen.
The goalies are almost a wash at this point; MAF has the better CV but also the big contract. If Pitts wants to make a run, some cap space could be handy.
I'm OK with 2 years of MAF. The next coach might be Julien or Hitchcock, so he'll be fine under that system.
Our kids are still 1-2 years away (min).

Mrazek has not been good, either .898 save # with a ga of 3+. As for Fleury, I don't think he is much of a upgrade over what we have. It would be better to trade Elliot for picks, the picks can than be used to trade for a good goalie.

What if Pittsburgh throws in a draft pick and retains 50% of his salary? This is one of the rare times that it's a buyers market. The Flames have the advantage of having no NHL goaltender to protect at the moment and with Pittsburgh's hands being tied, they might have to give the Flames an asset to do them a favor.

If the Flames are doing this and it allows the Pens to not only keep Murray but to also save a little under 3 million bucks in contract space over the next two season. I want either their first, or a third and an excellent winger prospect. Screw it, Pens meat barrel
But i have zero interest in moving Gio at this time.

I have zero interest in moving Gio as well. He's the most reliable defender on the team right now.

Yeah, but Elliott was .930 last year.

Fair enough but Elliott has never played 50 games in a season and played for a team with a heavy focus on defense. Fleury has played over 60 games 7 times for a team that plays a more open system. Having said that I see why people would hesitate but he is better than Elliott

If the Flames trade for a goalie, I hope he's on the right side of 30.
Any goalie we acquire will likely have to stay longer than just a few years. Gillies is still young, and he's still very uncertain. I don't see him becoming a starter before he's 25 or 26.
Let's stop wasting assets on short term aging goalies.

He played 59 in 2009/10 and 50 in 2010/11. Last year he played 60 games.

I think a straight swap Fleury <--> Elliott would be palatable if the Pens retain salary. Having Fleury for the next 2 years at say 3.7, isn't horrible. He's shown to be a quality starter in the league, Gillies/Rittich aren't going to be ready for at least 2 years, and then we're not shelling out 6+ per year for 5+ years on a guy like Bishop. If the Pens don't retain any then definitely, more assets will need to come this way.

I think most are out to lunch to think they'll get Fleury for a 3rd. Sure Rutherford is in tight, but the simple truth is that there would be more than one GM out there willing to take that on for a third rounder, and the second word gets out that he's available for that cheap will be the second his price goes up. I don't think Fleury would kybosh anything, personally. In a year like this, a 1st for Fleury is probably not out of the question.

Biggest choke artist in the league? On a team that needs clutch 'tending? Naw, can't see that going too well.

Okay I'll play:
Elliott and bouma or stajan
For Fleury, 2nd round pick
Flames 2nd, Johnson and mid level prospect for Mrazek (25% retained or ask Detroit to take whomever is left out of stajan/bouma in place of prospect)
Pittsburgh's 2nd to Las Vegas to not take Mrazek and hopefully take brouwer.
Estimated goalie salary 8.75m seems high for not having a top 10 goalie but is offset by dumping 2-3 bad contracts. Cost:
our second rounder and some bottom 6 holes to fill.
Disclaimer: I'd rather target Rask and would trade our 1st rounder assuming it's top 10 but not 1-2, and nearly any prospect to get him....Or possibly Schneider (Corey)
