It was hilarious. Every morning you would gather around a bus, and you were given your work assignments. You then paid cash ($4 each way) for the bus, or put it on your account. You then went to the farm, got paid $8/hr, then paid $20/night for accommodation. By the time you paid food and MAYBE booze, you were clearly in the hole.
I was staying in a 2br house close by that we filled with 6 people, split rent, brewed our own beer, and everyone brought home fruit and veggies for nightly stir fries. I lived with some English guy that was 40 something, just got out of jail, and would get LOADED every night singing to Oasis. It was terrifying because no one was brave enough to tell him to STFU.
I was lucky, I set up a job for $13/hr and figured out a ride to get there every day so I wasn't paying the hostel transport. Was there for 4 weeks, saved as much as possible and GTFO'd at the first possible moment. I talked to quite a few guys that were in this sh*t town (Bowen) for 6 months on their work holiday "vacation".
I will NEVER pick fruit again. EVER.

Did door to door sales for 3 months paid really decent at the time, would've been shorter but I had a trip to Asia I had to pay for.
Also did Cirque Du Doleil for three weeks when they were in town.

Lol oh ya, I had a few, here's one I remember the most...
Was dating this chick back in high school, probably like Grade 12 summer or something I got a job through my girlfriends brother in law doing Cribbing. If you don't know what cribbing is, let me ####ing tell you it is hands down the worst job in the world.
I show up first day on the construction site, it's pouring rain, don't know what the #### i'm doing but this "crew" was a bunch of crack headed looking mofo's barking orders at me and smoking like there was no tomorrow. It's wet, cold and i'm literally carrying ~200lbs of wood planks or whatever you call them down a slippery, muddy hills going up and down all day long so we can prepare for the concrete pour. Anyway, we have these ledges we walked on that were set up with 2x4's that were sketchy as hell when you're up 10-15 feet and trying to hammer these things in (safety equipment? pffff only pussies need that!) and I ended up falling off and catching my arm on rebar sticking out and getting a massive gash (still got the scar today). I quit half way through my second day when I was tasked to bend rebar for couple hours... seriously #### THAT JOB.
Enjoyed the rest of my summer, went to university that fall and the rest is history.
Oh and yeah, never got paid for it either, don't give a crap though, the foreman prob's needed that money for more booze and cig's.

I had no idea what they did. I figured it was some sort of data entry position. But for $15/hr at 18 years of age? Sweet f'ing deal!

Fun story -- I actually had an 'interview' at this place back in college too. Of course, it sounded too good to be true so I Googled it and found many stories just like yours. So I never showed up for the interview.
I was amused when the day after the scheduled interview (that I didn't show up for) I got a call saying "Congratulations! You got the job!". Threw the lady for a loop when I told her I didn't even come to the interview.

I played Tyrion Lannister in an off Broadway production that was a musical interpretation of Game of Thrones.
Definitely my shortest job.

I'm not sure if this counts seeing as I never did it but it was an eye-opener.
We've got a lot of educated people here so at some point you all have likely been approached by 'College Pro Painters.'
"You can make $30K over the Summer!!"
They left pamphlets everywhere until their scam was so widely known they had to change their name to something else now but its still the same scam.
I went to their seminar cult induction and within minutes it was pretty clear how bad a deal this was.
In the aftermath though I've probably helped a dozen people who got caught up in that crap get their financial poop in a group.
College Pro Painters...they're like that Carpet Cleaning Cult that wouldnt take George.

Shortest job was less than 3 hrs. When I first moved to Calgary I was looking for work and got on with a placement agency. They put me at a company where I was on the front desk with someone else who was training me. I was easily catching on, asking them intelligent questions and greeted a few people as they came in. Then out of nowhere the manager came down, told me that it wasn't going to work out and that I was no longer needed.
I was shocked and very upset thinking that Calgary is crazy competitive and that I made a huge mistake moving there. Over the next few weeks the agency placed me at a few shady places. Thankfully not long after that I got a permanent job at a good company where I was for 4 years before moving back east where I've been in my current job for 10 years.

I worked about 6 weeks for the auto stop car wash, and by the end of that, I was probably one of the most senior employees.
I showed up for an interview, they essentially put me to work, instead of having an interview.
Each morning, you showed up at opening time, but you could only clock in when it got busy enough to actually need you. You also had to clock out for any coffee break and lunch break you took.
I had rashes in a ring around my calves becasue of the constant rubbing of the rubber boots I wore.
Fantastic times - for $5.25 an hour.

Cribbing is actually somewhat fun (if you are working for a good company and have a good crew).
However, I've never done residential cribbing, and i can imagine that could suck.

I worked at futureshop once for 4 shifts, until I got the schedule where they had booked me for work only on the days I told them I couldn't work. Manager must have ####ed up after I gave him a calendar but nonetheless it was either work those days or don't work.

Yeah it was residential cribbing. I have worked some seriously intensive manual labour jobs, but this job/crew takes the cake for worst job. Only thing worse would be cleaning Saddledome toilets.

why wouldn't the pay be crap? the job is as easy as it comes.
you had to tidy shelves.
just to be curious, what did you consider being at work bloody early?

That was another one I nearly got sucked into -- also went to the first seminar thing and has my 'scam alarm' going off like crazy, so never showed up for whatever the next session was.
My dad did pretty well teaching me to wary of crap like that growing up, but I've still had some near misses. It's disgusting how they prey on people who are desperate with pie in the sky stories. It's important to teach our kids what to watch out for.

It just wasn't worth waking up an extra hour for such low pay and to pay for the extra gas. I think I had to wake up at 4 or 5 am. This was a long time ago

When I was 15 my mom got me a job at the Crowfoot bottle depot. I hated it.
As soon as lunch rolled around I told my boss I was going to subway and proceeded to walk straight home, never to go back. I should have handled it better...
My friends still bug me to this day about my 4 hour shift. I'm pretty much gaurunteed and message or photo every time someone drops their beer cans off.
