He can make nice backhand passes, but his stick is on the wrong side facing a defender.
So why force Hamilton/Wideman/Engelland to the wrong side?

- Struggling in every area of the game
- Killer 5-hole goal on Johnson (Gaudreau giveaway on the PP)
- Thinks Gulutzan "teeing off" is pathetic, better served behind closed doors
- Coach's game to get the team prepared; many areas they don't seem cohesive. Not sure Gully's a good caoch

I don't think that Brodie has been struggling this season because of the side that he is playing on. I think most of the struggles can be put squarely on the system in which the d-men aren't used in transition at all. Transition is Brodie's biggest strength and before the 2nd (4th of the season) game against the Oilers, you would very rarely see him do any breakouts by himself, where last year (and recently this year), he has been doing it much more often. I actually don't mind Brodie on the left though, his zone entry preventions are unreal with his excellent stick. I do miss the unreal backhand passes though.
Of course, Wideman is a downgrade from Giordano as well, but I'm confident that the main reason is because of the coaching system that is restricting the d-men from getting involved in transition. On top of this, with no d-men in transition, there are less options for Johnny to pass to off of the rush, which results in a snowball effect of less offense for everyone.

I hope GG had equally harsh words for the players to their faces. If he's just going to the media to rip them that's a quick way for your team to tune you out. This team is not at all cohesive and that wouldn't help matters at all.
As for Brodie. He has been absolutely horrible this year when you compare to the last few years, but then you could say the exact same thing for almost every player on the team. It really is pathetic.

I doubt there are General Managers out there who are trending up so early in their careers as him. That's cool if you can counter argue that, I'd like to hear about others to broaden my own horizons.
Glen Gulutzen reminds me of the opposite of Mike Keenan, no leadership abilities and natural aura of strength......but boy would he be able to impress you with his knowledge in the boardroom or perhaps on a hiking trip. Where as people are not wowed by Mike Keenan as a tactician but boy do you ever listen to him when he talks. It is paramount as a coach to be able to really be heard. I do not think this comes naturally to Glen Gulutzen, I bet he would be a great powerplay coach, head scout or even great in a management role. As a coach he does not have the gravitas to really be heard, a gravitas that both Darryl Sutter and Bob Hartley personify.
Does this sound crazy? Perhaps.
Is this a rant thread? Definitely
Have I ranted? No not yet. Or maybe I have, its all about perspective you know.
I shall rant though if they get rid of Burke or Treveling.

Agreed. Being an NHL coach is incrediblally hard, and having the right qualities to be it is incrediblally rare and very smart hockey guys aren't all suited to be head coaches. The problem I've had from the beggining with the Gully is I didn't understand what he did in the past to warrant a job of this magnitude with this much scrutiny in a hockey city in Canada. He seems to be in over his head even though he may be a good hockey guy. It takes a special something to be a good head coach in the NHL and Gully has never proved he has this ability. And young teams need good head coaches to further development.

He has experience at the ECHL and AHL level and he comes from a teaching background, also being a former professional hockey player gives him initial credibility as well. I scouted the Canucks message boards after the flames hire and they thought he would be a great assistant coach when he went from Dallas to Vancouver.
You need to know how to be heard though and have that right makeup. I don't have it which is why I am in management and not on the project ground level of my company (which I love infinitely more) and that is why I recognize it. The man who could be the smartest in the room, but not the man who could lead the troops to victory.

Ya, that's exactly my point. Leadership and getting the best out of your players (and in the the real world your employees) is a special quality not many people have. I don't like bashing the guy because he's obviously dedicated his whole life to hockey but being a head coach of any NHL hockey team is very hard even if they are great. Getting people to reach their potential is an ability very few people have and it's not Gully's fault that he doesn't have this quality, I for sure don't. Most people struggle to get the best out of themselves but when you are trying to motivate an entire team or company it's a different animal few can do. Even with all of Hartleys tactical errors on the defensive side he still has this quality which is why I think a certain portion of the fan base is now realizing how important that is. It's even more than just being a leader. Babcock is probably the best at this. Those Detroit teams of the past few years were by no means the most talented but he knew exactly what to say and what to do to keep all of his players motivated and achieving their goals. Flames desperately need this.

I think Treliving is starting to feel the pressure.
TRELIVING ECHOES COACH'S FRUSTRATIONS
Quote:
A day after his uncharacteristic eruption, Gulutzan's boss, GM Brad Treliving, threw his unconditional backing behind the coach.
"One hundred percent,'' he replied. "Glen is speaking from the heart and he is speaking the truth.
"He's usually very even-keeled in his remarks. But he's at a point, too, where something's got to trigger.
"This was not done for show. It was not a motivational tool.
"This was, as I said, from the heart.
"There is a boiling point.
"Sometimes, the truth can be telling."

Unless it's a RW who can score and handle the puck without killing every play. Even then what's the point, teams 4-7 Dmen are the worst in the league.

I'd like to hear from Brian Burke.
Actually, I'd like BB to pay a visit to the Flames locker room to rip this team a new one. The only problem I see with that is that it might be seen as undermining the Head Coach.
Still .... I think it would be worth considering.

He made a specific point about the 4th line about a specific thing they did wrong that led to the first goal of the game.
And he also addressed other issues with the team right now.
I see nothing wrong with his comments.

It's the wrong person calling out his players, Gulutzen does not have the, man I do not even know what to call it that allows coaches to call their players out in the media.
Darryl Sutter did have this I do not even know what to call it that I speak of.

I actually don't blame Gulutzan one bit for talking in the media.
1. Media asks a question, he was honest. I like that and really what's wrong with that?
2. Whether he said it in the room to the players or to the media, what's said is said. HE was emotional and pissed off after the game, give the guy a break. The players frankly don't really even deserve to be treated like professionals anyway because they aren't acting like it.
3. At least he is showing emotion for once.
4. I think there's value in showing the fanbase that they care. That the team cares, the coach cares, that they are frustrated. I think there's value in going public with it. They are aware of what is being said on this site, on the fan960, in the media, etc. I think they're concerned about their reputation and I don't blame them for lashing out the way they are.

Don't make fun of analysts like that....some people were born to be analysts and not part of a hockey club. Yes I do know he failed in Stars and Flames organizations, but he has been an undeniable contributor to hockey pundits for a very long time.

Yes but no, you can have the balls for doing it, but it does not mean it comes across right.
Kinda like my Dad, he says crap in the board room and people are all ears....I say it and all people laugh at me.
Kinda like that.
