Backlund is 27 and is our only defensive minded Center and our best player this season and he's only 27.

Why do we need to trade him? Even if we think we are a couple years away he's still young enough to be a part of the future.

We've watched him progress for a decade and turn into a great player and now we want to trade him? He's a good trading piece but are we really going to get a better player back?

Backlund also is going to require a new 5-7 year contract north of $5M per when he is 29. Not the worst idea to move on and sell high but that is a summer move if you ask me

Lets see what happens over the next few games, the Flames are only 4 points up on 28th place Dallas and they have 2 games in hand. If the season starts going south, open the store for the older players.

Someone suggested earlier in the thread, what would it take to get Schneider out of New Jersey? He was pulled with a GAA of 9 or something tonight but still. We need an effin save.

The devils would probably want what they gave up to get him. A top 10 pick in a deep draft.

He's only solidified himself further as a legitimate no1 since that deal.

The Flames should be buyers whether they are in the race or not.

The Flames could get players for the future. In 03, despite being out of it the Flames picked up Donovan, Ferrence, McAmmond and Commodore at the the trade deadline for next to nothing. All four were key pieces the following season and beyond. The Oilers were out of it last year. Maroon looks pretty good on their top line this year. The Ducks are even paying 25%.

The Flames have plenty of holes. Start filling them. Trading vets for draft picks that usually bust isn't going to any good.

I believe that people should start to see Backlund as an integral part of the core that can't be traded.

My list of untouchables would be as follows:

Backlund
Tkachuk
Hamilton
Brodie

That is all.

Apparently the fancy stats GM who many believe is who Burke was talking about regarding a ridiculous offer for Hamilton, has offered Hanzal to Montreal but wants McCarron, a first and another pick.

Interesting and not without merit.

If we are basing things on this season alone (hence no Monahan or Gaudreau) I can't see how you would have Brodie on your untouchables list. On many nights he's been our worst defenceman.

Trading Gio would be good to get rid of that awful contract, but our defense would be just atrocious unless we get a good D prospect in return. But why a team would give us a Good prospect for an aging Dman on a long term big contract who is 2 years past his prime is beyond me.

Took Backlund years to get where he is now, how dumb would it be if this team got rid of Gaudreau. Probably would end up like St.Louis 2.0 but we probably would at least get something. Still extremely stupid. Probably would take another full year of Johnny being crap for me to say he's not an untouchable.

I agree, I'm a really big fan of Backlunds but I wouldn't be totally upset if they moved him out in the offseason. I think they could get a really good package for him as well.

That said, I'm not saying they should trade him, I'd be just as happy to re-up him.

Peoples' memories are surprisingly short.

Yes, the team is playing poorly now but does that mean you cut loose Monahan, Gaudreau, Hamilton & Bennett?

How fickle.
