Hard to drive the offence when your horse(s) have 3 legs.
Johnny is our best skilled player but he's getting hacked, slashed and beat up night after night and unbelievably no teammate is sending a message not to do so. This is the biggest reason why he's struggling.
It's around the league now, clobber Gaudreau and you win because the Flames are gutless creampuffs. If wouldn't be like this had someone flattened Parise into next week when Minni decided to target Gaudreau with a million slashes.
This team reminds me of the gutless Oilers of 3 years ago.

At the point I always thought the players on the Oilers would think to themselves "whats the point in sticking up for our team mates when we are going to lose?"
Which would be silly for flames players to think because they are still in a playoff spot and if they would show some emotion and drive to compete they could still be competitive.
The Oilers at that time were awful and no where near the playoffs.
GG should be working to get their heads in it.

I think GG is the main reason they are not sticking up for each other.

I'm sick and tired of the excuses all these players and coaches cashing in million dollar checks keep making. "We just couldn't find our legs tonight." "We just came out of the gate flat." "Bounces just aren't going our way right now." "GG needs to motivate these guys." Enough. These guys are being paid an extraordinary amount of money to do a job. In the real world, if you don't do your job you get fired. No excuses. Unbelievable that their salary isn't enough to get motivated every single game. You are in the NHL for #### sakes. That should be motivation enough to give 110% every game.
How many chances do these players need? I can live with an off night or two. Everyone has them. But when you don't produce for almost a month (Bennett), you should be canned. Now some will start crying, "He is still just a kid and developing". I don't buy that. Maybe he does wake up and turn his game around someday, but sports is a 'results oriented' business. We need results now. This franchise doesn't have 5 years to wait for players to develop. Not when fans are being forced to fork over absurd amounts of money to watch these supposedly talented players. Not when we have been waiting for almost 30 years for a truly competitive team.
This is why I believe guaranteed contracts should not be given in sports. Players sign a huge deal (Monahan and Johnny) and then decide they don't need to try anymore. If putting in an effort doesn't appeal to these players there are thousands of players who would kill to take their spot. I love that the NFL and CFL don't have guaranteed contracts. You can't play up to your contact and the teams standards? Goodbye, we will find someone who will.
This team does not perform nearly close enough to what they charge for the privilege to watch them. It's the reason why I haven't spent a single dollar on Flames tickets in probably 6 years and the reason why I barely even watch free games on TV anymore. I don't expect a cup every year, but I do expect more than one exciting season in 2 decades.

GG could stand to be a little more radical with his job on the line, bench more guys. Pull what you can from the AHL.

Excuses
He needs to battle through that stuff. He needs to be better. The best players in the world deal with this and still produce. Is he one of those or not?

Trying slashing Crosby or McDavid 20 times in a game and see what happens, I'm not sure if you ever played a team sport at a high level but I assure you this stuff shouldn't happen without retribution.

Ah the 'ol "i disagree with you so you must not have played sports" blast. One of the very best.
Retribution is a myth in the modern day NHL.
The best players play through it and get their revenge on the scoreboard.

Also, as the most penalized team in the league the Flames they are coming right back with retribution and cheap shots. That proves your point because look at where it's gotten them.

So if young players are not instantly good they should give up on them because they don't have enough time to develop them? Unless I am misunderstanding you that seems pretty shortsighted?

He was driving offense for 2 years. There's no doubt in my mind Gaudreau would be lighting it up on a team with decent coaching. He's frustrated beyond belief out there.

I know that management talked with the players when Hartley was fired and I wonder if management has sat down candidly or off the record to discuss the problems this year and to figure out how the coaching situation is going?

You are entitled to that view but I think you are letting him off the hook.
He is paid to produce.
He isn't.
That's not on the coach. That's on the player.
What I see with Johnny is nothing that the coach would control
- Facing tougher competition, who have adjusted to his offense. Now he needs to adjust.
- He's trying to do it all himself. He needs to use his teammates better
- He's making some bad mistakes and turnovers
The coach is easy to blame. Far easier than to blame the player that everyone loves. But at some point dude has to produce. That's his job.

It has nothing to do with coaching. Players have to motivate themselves and find ways to overcome the obstacles facing them.

Gaudreau did produce last season. That's how he hit the Gio cap. Top 10 production in the entire league.
Ask yourself how Grossmann played multiple games for this team. That's not a good plan.
