3 years ago we all said a 5 year rebuild would be fine.
I can remember when we all talked. We all had "suffered" so much, with the seasons of pain and near misses. We all agreed it was the time to move certain players, get picks and enter the re-draft. We agreed it would be a "process" we said that would be fine. Now we are 3/4 years in, and we are not winning cups...we may not be a playoff team..we may not even be good..
But the change is happening...I think it's for the better..we may not be contenders yet...but we are probably on our way..we have players to be excited about...and young players growing..
I say... stay the course and keep building! I feel we are more than halfway there!
GFG!!!!!

This isn't black or white judgement against a linear timeline. There are a series of events that lead to people feeling the way they do right now.

I would say we are way less than 50% to being a true cup contender, and we may not even be getting there at this current trajectory.

I'm assuming you aren't a season ticket holder?
If you think any season ticket holder signed up for 5 years of garbage hockey you are out of your mind

I didn't ask for garbage, but as a STH, I was more than ready for a 5 year rebuild.

I'm pretty sure it's 4 years in two months.
Wasn't there a retool first?
2013 was a terrible season.

The Flames are hamstrung by having 15 million dollars tied up in players that could be replaced by AHL talent and you wouldn't notice much difference in the ability of the group.
Because of that, the team cannot field a team with then proper depth, which affects everyone else.
Looking at next season.
Gaudreau-Monahan-UFA/Trade
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
UFA/Trade-Bennett-Brouwer
Ferland-Stajan/Jankowski if the former is dealt-Hathaway
Giordano-Brodie
UFA/Trade-Hamilton
Kylington/Andersson-Kulak/Cheap Vet UFA
Johnson + young goalie or veteran UFA/trade
If the Flames fall hard in the standings, they will be getting another high end player like Tippett, who may be able to slide into the NHL lineup. Calgary can easily use 8-10 million on two of those three main holes in the lineup, the other may need to be filled via a prospect making the NHL.

Some of us thought it would take longer. Sutter left this team with the worst collection of under-27 players and prospects in the NHL. It takes longer than 5 years to draft and develop a new core and supporting players.

Problem is their compete level and overall product is arguably worse than the 13-14 season (year 1).

Hahaha your monitary ticket price pales at my lifetime devotion to the team.
I make a good salery. Actually its pretty great. But that means nothing when i speak of the team. If i lived in calgary id have my seats every night friend. I just dont. But if i did id pay and eat a rebuild no problem!!

If management thought we were still in the rebuild phase they wouldn't have offered 4.5 million x 4 years to a 31 year old. But yeah, lets fire the coach who got the team to the 2nd round for the first time in 11 years.

A new coaching staff and a couple of roster tweaks would go a long way, I think things could improve in a hurry. There's some good pieces here. They can't let this fester too long though or we risk entering Oiler territory. Treliving needs to swallow his pride and fire Gulutzan asap.

This.
Worst collection of young talent and worst asset base in the entire league.
The old "core" included Iginla, Kipper, Langkow, Regehr, Jokinen, and a few others. The net return of all those pieces is virtually nothing now.
So basically they were starting with something similar to an expansion team from an asset POV.

This is just not true at all. Expansion teams don't start with Brodie, a 25 year old Giordano, Backlund, Baertschi. Nevermind have chips like Bouwmeester, Cammaleri and Iginla to trade for picks.
So no its not like that at all

I wish the idea of a 5 year rebuild would just #### off and die already. For every Toronto this year I'll give you the Islanders. The Oilers needed a lottery ball to get a generational talent. Is that available to us Flames and Jets fans? (Channeling inner Burke I guess)
Either GM can put together a winning team or not. Treliving still has another year or two tops to prove he can do it, and Chevy sure as hell has proven he can't.
This hockey myth needs to go away.

Forgot about Bouw and Cammy - and they further my point...that the Flames got themselves in a situation where they netted virtually nothing from that asset base.
So when I'm making that comment, I'm talking about after the team had "started" the re-build by trading off what they could and had left. Which was very little.

An expansion team? What year are you using as your starting point for this comment? Not sure I agree.
And how many years do you need to build "young talent"? Since players only stay young for a short period of time.
On the NHL roster, we have Backlund, Gio and Brodie from that era.
Bennett, Tkachuk and Monahan were simply obvious draft picks because team was so bad. I suspect Sutter would have drafted same guys.
A different regime drafted Gaudreau.
I agree with being patient but can you really imply current organization is so much better at building young talent? Have they developed the picks that were acquired from trading some of the previous core?

Lol, he literally stated that we looked like an expansion team AFTER you consider the dick all we got for those assets. Yes, we were very close to an expansion line-up at the beginning of this rebuild.
