I guess that means Luke dies while Rey is training.

Maybe they're renaming themselves. Jeddhai. Jeedai. Deji? Force Conquerors. Heros of the Force? Ren Slayers? Captain Crunchers?

I don't think it has to mean that Luke dies, Rey is not a Jedi right now so it could mean that Luke is the last Jedi and we know she found him.
It is no secret that she is on that island and we can assume that a large chunk of this movie will be her getting trained by Luke.

to me, it makes logical sense for Luke to die and probably in this movie.
I mean the whole idea of this trilogy was to put the GFFA in new hands, and have a new and more brutal enemy.

Though with killing Han Solo in the last movie and Carrie's passing a short time ago, killing Luke might have too hard of an emotional heft.

But, my theory is that the big bad in this trilogy is not Snoke but possibly Kylo Ren, For Ren to be the max big bad, he has to beat someone that's credible and that's Luke.

I don't think this movie is about Luke's death, making Rey the last Jedi. Luke IS the last Jedi. I think it's going to be all about his return to action. The next one will be about his passing of the torch lightsaber.

I guess I have a different viewpoint of it, in that if we're talking about the last of the Jedi, I tend to think at some point in order to establish Ren as a viable threat, he literally has to become hugely powerful. And to me that means killing Luke who would be a credible threat. That way we can have Rey battling against huge odds to establish the Jedi.
To have a old man going sabers to me and having rey there too doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm still convinced that Snoke is the key based on what Solo said to his son about Snoke using him for his power. I'm convinced that Snoke is a con, a non force user that wants to rule the galaxy and needs a powerful force user to do it. At some point Ren will realize that and kill his "Master" and fully commit himself to the Dark side.

Considering that they are calling it the Skywalker Saga...I would assume that Luke does not pass till the end of episode 9. Unless of course Rey is a Skywalker.

The thing to keep in mind is that "Jedi" is both singular and plural.

The Skywalker Saga.

Rogue One is the only movie (so far) outside of that.

I'm holding out hope for a Yoda-esque passing from Luke to Rey in IX, rather than being killed in battle in VIII or, even worse, a Jedi Master getting sliced in half when he thought he was being hugged.

Exactly this. It could refer to a group of Jedi.

Based on what we've seen so far. Luke was the last Jedi, and he was training a group of young Jedi. Kylo Ren goes nuts and kills all his trainees and Luke goes into hiding.
