The Flames already have a lot of money tied up in players like Stajan, Brouwer, Frolik (who's been good), and Bouma.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to spend assets acquiring another average player with a decent sized contract.

If they do acquire someone, hopefully he's either young or on a Versteeg-like contract.

The Flames need a top 6 forward not a top 9.

So what they really want is a depth forward on the cheap who they could possibly re-sign in the summer.

I think need a younger top 6 forward not someone over 27/28

Young top 6 forwards almost never get moved at the deadline. Those are moves that typically get made at the draft/over the summer. More realistically we are talking about a cheap rental like Iginla as a gap-filler, and then after the expansion draft maybe it's time to chase after a longer-term solution like Eberle.

Depends how you feel about losing Ferland in the expansion draft. 6 pretty obvious spots taken up by Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Backlund, Frolik, Brouwer. You'd assume the deadline acquisition would take the 7th spot, leaving Ferland exposed. So as it currently stands, we're likely to lose Kulak, Shinkaruk, Jokipakka, Poirier, or something similar (I'll just assume Kulak is the most valuable there). So any trade we make would in effect be:

Flames gain: Top-6 RW + Kulak

Flames lose: What we paid + Ferland

Not that the gap from Kulak to Ferland in value is that big, but something to keep in mind.

Trade Poirier for Iginla or Jagr and call it a day.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Flames pry Tom Wilson out of Washington. Big body Rh RW that still has potential to grow. Maybe they would be willing to take a rental for a strong playoff run. Engelland or wideman with salary retained to help for a deep playoff push perhaps.

What a waste of Poirier. He's better than Iginla right now. The only thing keeping Iginla in the NHL right now is his reputation. He's been horrible all year. No longer a NHL player. Move on people, he's way past expired.

Lol, Poirier is better than Iginla right now? Not even close. I don't want Iginla either but Poirier also is terrible and not an NHL player.

That's how bad Iginla has been. He just can't keep up at the NHL pace anymore. Poirier can at least do that. If Iginla had attended on a PTO he would have been released early in camp.

We probably have a top nine forward on the farm but we will never know because they won't call anyone up!!! Give anyone a chance to grow into a spot.... Because lord knows we have to make sure they aren't undercooked !!! Nooooo lets bring in some good old retreads... Send us all your chiassons, bolligs etc... We will reinvent them! Argh... Lol

So Ferland has come up a couple of times as the guy who'd be exposed at the expansion draft. Can't figure out why he'd be the choice over Brouwer. I like TB, and he does have a few more points than Ferly in a few less games. But. He's older and I'm thinking that Ferland still is learning and growing. I don't think he's reached his potential yet. His play this year is light-years ahead of last season. Not sure you're getting more out of Brouwer in the long run.

I think I'd take my chances at Brouwer being exposed over Ferland if the Flames brought in someone else for a non-rental term. Am I missing something here?

I think they assume the 3M line is #1 right now and doesn't need help and Stajan's line has been solid regardless of the wingers...so the new player would slot into one of the other 2 lines

Ferland is a 4th liner while Brouwer is a 2/3rd liner so not comparable players. Do people realize Ferland has 10 or 11 career goals and isn't a skilled player at all? It seems when people talk about him they see a 2nd liner or something. He's a good fourth liner and a very incosistent player and has been his entire career.

Mentioning him in the same breath as Brouwer is an insult to Brouwer.

Who are you protecting instead? An unsigned Versteeg?

1/2/3 Johnny / Mony / Bennett
4/5 Backs / Frolik
6 Brouwer
7 Ferland

IMO.

That's what I was thinking too AC but I think he was thinking in a scenario where we acquired another forward we'd need to protect

Either way, there's no way Brouwer gets exposed
