We should be paying all restaurant staff a living wage at a minimum and restaurants need to account for that when pricing their menu and service offerings. Just like everywhere else in the world!!

Personally, I like to tip well because it makes me feel good and also helps out the worker who is also just trying to get by. But I usually ask if there is a delivery fee and make the total tip ~20% with that taken into account. I also make sure that the driver gets ALL of that delivery fee since he/she is the dude/dudette that actually brought the thing to my house.

Why stop at restaurant staff? Why shouldn't everyone be paid a living wage? The most recent information I could find was from late 2015 and apparently the living wage for Calgary, at that time, was $18 and change (calculated by Vibrant Calgary or something like that.)

I'm pretty sure he's saying they should be paid minimum wage by their employer, not by customers. The service industry is the only (that I know of) that doesn't do this.

As it stands service staff generally make wages out of proportion with the type of work and "prerequisites" (ie education, experience) the jobs require.

I'm sorry. I'm not tipping you for pouring me a coffee or doing a good job of putting lettuce on my subway bun. drives me crazy the expectation from places where they don't deserve a tip.

do they make wages out of proportion with the prerequisites tho? education needed, none. experience needed, none. so minimum wage sounds about right to me

agreed, or at least return to a sane system of tipping for exceptional service. It should go that way anyway, back to a 5-10% standard for great service.

Tipping percentages seem to be getting crazy high. Now some are expecting 20-25%? That's a quarter of the bill. That's insane. With the minimum wage going up, I now do 12%.

I usually tip about 15% with good service.
If the female server has nice boobs showing for the couple hours I am there, I tip more. I admit it.

I read an article once where it was suggested the new standard of tipping should be 20-25%. If the menu prices are increasing over the years (and they certainly are), then the 15% we used to tip is already a pay raise.

Yeah I don't get tipping anymore. I HATE the automatic 20% establishments. Either pay up or look like a ###### hitting the 12-15% in front of the waitress.

Spent a few days in Miami Beach over Xmas. 18% tip automatically tacked onto the bill. They are already gouging you on price. Will not return there.
