I'd like to see them given training on what potential situations could be dangerous and how to avoid them. Then give them lessons on the use of pepper spray and tasers etc.
Also the police should be conducting STING operations on a continual basis. Patrolling isn't good enough. They can take the officers off of traffic duty and have them do something more useful for a change.

Good idea. Where are cops more useful? Making sure people aren't driving 10km over the speed limit, or trying to get violent offenders in jail? Especially since this city is now short on police officers, I would argue you need to allocate those assets to what keeps this city the most safe.

But putting crooks in jail doesn't put money in the coffers. You gotta watch your bottom line, man.

Shame some of these businesses into spending the 2 miunutes a day to sweep up. You can also post pics and addresses of houses where there is crap in the yard.

LOL, I like that idea. But you'd most likely get into Legal trouble if you started posting pictures of ppl's houses and businesses.

They had an interesting addition to this story on Global the other night too.
Apperently the same guy got beat up a couple of weeks ago and had his 2 pitbulls put down after they had attacked the neighbours dog and neighbour in 2 different incidents.
There was some speculation that the neighbour or his teen age son may have been involved in the beating, but the nieghbour denied it and said he would fully cooperate with any investigation.
Anyway, not that it justifies the beating, but it seems this old man was far from your average senior citizen and may have been involved in things he knew were not good.
Certainly more to this story then first appeared. It's likely not just a bunch of punk kids attacking a random old man.

There is no such thing as overeacting to violence -- Ramp it up and ramp it up till it's down to next to nothing.
In fact why not take a 5 year hiatus from peacekeeping abroad and put every single one of our troops into the police force and try and take a real chunk out of violent crime.
|
I agree we should fight violence but resources have to be allocated appropriately. If youth crime isn't up (which it's not), then we shouldn't focus so much on "kids these days" as many people often do. It only distracts from the realities of crime in our society and wastes our efforts on fighting a mythical increase in a certain type of crime, rather then the real increasing problems.

Putting all those troops as police officers would fight violent crime right across the board no matter what age the perp is!!!!

Focusing on kids is only part of the solution. The focus should be on the family. How come so many more parents these days don't know what their kids are up to? 10-15 years ago when I was a teenager, my parents knew what I was doing, and who I was hanging out with. This seems to be less and less the case these days - less focus on the family and more focus on the $$$ and material goods seem to be what is driving people, not being proud of their families.

Judging by the article(s), the kids probably should have known what their
parent was up to.
Ok, ok. Lame attempt at a joke. I'll stop now.

Yeah, age really isnt relivant(sp?) in this article anymore.
IMHO I don't think it really should have in the first place. its all just a case of people ganging up on one.

What? Age shouldn't have mattered? A 61 year old is a lot more volnerable than a even 1 15 year old. Regardless if the old fart was selling drugs. The stomped on his head over and over. I think all they would have had to do is push the guy to the ground.

Well....there is always an exception. Before my grandpa died he was still tuff as a bull. He could crush my hand in a handshake. He was 75 when he died (only a few weeks ago). But he could not move fast at all...and I think that is where the old guys would get slammed.

"Two other male teens, one with dyed hair and a gold lip ring, were seen nearby and police want to speak with them. "
Why don't they tell us the colour? One would think it logical. How could they know if the teen had dyed hair unless they observed said teen thereby observing his hair?. Furthermore, what half-wit notes the fact that the hair is coloured but not the actual colour the hair is?

Interesting point, I did not think of that.
