The city uses both sodium and calcium chloride.

If you're driving to Calgary after a chinook you can see the salt on the roads when you hit the city limits. The colour of the highway goes from black to white.

Yeah the roads look pretty gross when dry as they turn pure white and in the spring when we start getting rain you see all that soapy looking water draining into the sewers. Not the greatest for the environment but unless the province makes winter tires mandatory the city has no choice but to condition the roads for the lowest common denominator.

I think if the city were to cut down on the gravel it uses, then a lot of auto glass shops in town would be out of business.

it would be interesting to know if quebec reduced it's road salt application after the legislation of winter tires (or tyres).

Those Michelin LTX's are great tires, and really good in winter. I am surprised that they don't have the snowflake symbol, lots of siping and great grip.

Just comes down to the rubber. If they were a tad softer and didn't harden up in the cold, they likely would be winter rated

Great in the snow and not so good on ice.
