There's no way she beats Nenshi. Not sure why she would give up her federal job for that.

Yeah, but sitting in opposition isn't what she signed up for either. If it was a one-on-one race I think it would be closer than you think as well. I don't think much of her, personally, but shes credible, electable and there are plenty of people not enthralled with Nenshi. I think it would be quite interesting to see.

Isn't she better suited to being a member of the opposition anyway? In terms of her political talents I'd think so.

If she runs against Nenshi I think she wins.

I think you'd have a real campaign on issues. Which would be quite refreshing. I'd worry about Rempal going populist on bike lanes and taxes but Nenshi if actually challenged hopefully would return to his politics in full sentences style that got him elected instead of his politics in 140 character not quite as witty as I think they are tweets he does now.
But I'd quite like two people with clear visions for what Calgary looks like in 10 years debating those visions and how to achieve them.

I actually would slightly favor her to beat Nenshi right now, without any campaigning. But since she's never been in a real campaign (she's skated to 30+% wins in her federal runs), that's where Nenshi has the big advantage of knowing what it takes to win a tight race (plus an established local network to draw on). If she feels she has no future in the CPC (i.e. she can't become leader), I would think she might get involved here, or maybe as a more palatable option to Kenney as PC leader.

Ever since her entry into politics I've had very little respect for her. She was handed a safe riding(mine) becuase she was friends with Harper's wife. Then she refused to show up to any debates(remember the potted plant?) so she wouldn't have to answer for herself. She sailed in by party affiliation only.
Now, I'll admit that she has made a name for herself since then but I thought that was a really greasy entry and it's tough to respect that. Her style of politicking is not something I care for, either.

Judging by the Facebook comments, people are largely siding with Nenshi, and Rempel has damaged her brand. But, I was looking at CBC, not the Sun.

I'd actually give her the edge over Nenshi in a mayoral race. Not by a lot but her talking points about controlling spending hits Nenshi where he is weakest.

Social media skews heavily towards younger, tech-savvy voters, so it's not surprising to see more support for Nenshi. But lots of old people who aren't on Facebook or Twitter vote. People also forget that Nenshi has enjoyed a booming economy for most of his term in office. A city in today's economic climate has a very different mood than the Calgary of 2010 and 2013.
A Nenshi vs Rempel contest would be tighter than people think.

Can't see how she'd have the edge over Nenshi. Sometimes his mouth gets him in trouble but he has a long term vision for this city that I agree with and I think he's doing a good job executing that vision. This reminds me of elbowgate - immediately crying foul in an attempt to get political capital over a nothing issue.
Thought this quote was funny in the CBC article. Trump or Rempel?
It's really bad. It's really, really bad and we need to fix it

That potted plant wasn't her though, it was Joan Crockatt who lost to Kent Hehr in Calgary Centre last time around.

No, it was her. Not sure if they did the same thing last time for Crockatt, too.

I was told by a relative who is fairly politically involved (municipally) that he and others, mainly various business groups, are actively trying to recruit a star conservative candidate to run against Nenshi so this wouldn't surprise me at all.

I didn't witness any of those comments from her (other twitter users, maybe), and she doesn't remember them either:

The only thing that she actually wrote that Nenshi mentions in the article refers to the following:

Without other evidence, I consider Nenshi to have fabricated the "a-hole" and "pathetic" statements from the above article. Nenshi has done this in the past with regards to the Uber issue, making lying about his opponents another bad habit of his.
I'm sorry Nenshi fans. He is in the wrong on this and keeps digging deeper.

I have seen her noticeably pivot to more local issues in the past few months (though she's always leaned toward constituent-driven commentary over national commentary).

Bownessian, what he said:
Quote:
"She spent hours tweeting and re-tweeting the most vicious personal attacks and insults against me," the mayor said Thursday, after several days of sparring with Rempel through social and traditional media.
"I've never seen a politician in Canada do anything like that before — you know, calling me an a-hole, calling me pathetic — for hours ... It's odd behaviour, so clearly she's not interested in actually talking about the issue with me."
|
As always, context is important. Screen capture of the re-tweet, which appears to have been removed from her twitter:
So again, Nenshi was correct in that she re-tweeted others calling him an a-hole.
