So why did you think Monahan would be captain before then?

I'd wager that if you just signed onto CP this year your handle would be Tkachuk for Mayor. 2005 sign up? Phanuef for Major. 2012? Sven for Major.

I think the big difference will be that Tkachuk if not scoring will bring other things to the table. Hits, physical play, battling along the boards, drawing penalties, dragging his teammates into the fight.

Monahan when not scoring goes pretty damn invisible as we've certainly witnessed this season.

I think the level headed guy like Monahan makes a better captain and the #### disturber like Tkachuk will always make a better A. He's going to be our lovable dickbag, but I'm not sure that's the guy you want dealing with the refs after scrums.

The amount of crap Monahan is taking for having a bad year is unreal. He's a 22 year old #1 centre with 2.5 good seasons under his belt (last year he struggled first half too), and half a bad season in which he missed most of training camp due to injury, and his linemate decided to hold out for a big contract and then got injured.

Other centres who have goal and point totals in the same range as Monahan this year are Toews, Kopitar, Statsny, O'Reilly and Galchenyuk, Do they all suddenly suck too?

It's a bad season for Monahan, absolutely. But let's not write him off, and run him out of town because of it.

Well, he's not on the trading block with Brodie and Bennett. Yet...

Considering he just signed the third richest contract on the team, there have been expectations for him to generate offense. However, he has largely been ineffective for the majority of the games this season. Monahan has had 44 games now, but has not yet been able to pick it up, even with Gaudreau on his line.

Your comparisons are a little questionable, since:
Toews has played 9 less games
Kopitar has played 8 less games
O'Reilly has played 14 less games
Galchenyuk has played 19 less games

In addition, Monahan has the third lowest +/- (-15) of all the centres in the league (not that +/- says everything). Of course, there's still time for him to pick it up and we're all hoping that he'll return to being the Monahan of old. We shouldn't write him off/run him out of town, but it definitely makes sense to be concerned, as he has been completely underwhelming considering we made a ~$45Mish investment in him.

So what doe we think here, he's regressed at 22 years of age? That seems likely to me. Stupid BT, paid a player post apex.

Well, some of us knew he was on the wrong side of 21.

Because at the time he seemed like the logical choice. I still feel Mony is very respected by his peers and could captain a team... However we drafted this Tkachuk kid, and he now seems like a better choice.

As to my username... No.

I wouldn't want an agitator as the captain especially with how much the refs already hate us.

Imagine Tkachuk talking to the refs pleading the Flames case..

Just you wait until Tkachuk inevitably has some kind of slump. Maybe even the dreaded sophomore slump next season. It's going to be unbearable.

Monahan had exactly this kind of excitement his rookie season. The sky was the limit. Now that he's kind of taken a step back (like literally every single NHL player in history does at some point), this is what we get.
