What would be the harm in sending him down, then right away release him to the world juniors? They could then facilitate a trade while he was in world juniors. I'm trying to follow the logic with all these excuses and they make no sense.
I remember an Oilers reporter saying it was better for him to stay up because he made a lot more money in the NHL and being he just started and hasn't had many pay cheques it was better for him.

Odd behaviour.

I was puzzled that they kept him beyond the 9 games. His skating was clearly not at an NHL level. Seeing him play for Team Europe this month, it is obvious how much better he now skates.

Thank you Benning!
With Tkachuk doing so well and one already one of the top 2-way wingers in the league and 4th in rookie scoring, Dubois in the minors, Poolparty :] in the minors after a putrid NHL start, Canucks fans in tears

Canuck fans are likely always going to regret this pick. Joulevi may pan out to be a top pairing Dman but I feel Tkachuk will be a sure fire first line winger with captain potential. The style he plays is coveted by 31 teams in the league and his skills in junior certainly have translated well to the NHL level. He is easily having the best rookie season of our top 10 picks during this rebuild. What is shocking is he is currently having a better season than Monahan who is in his 4th year, Gaudreau in his third and less surprising Bennett in his second

I use to see Monahan as future captain. It's Tkachuk without question now.

I think we should keep him up. Not sure what's left for him to learn in junior.

He is not having a better year than Gaudreau IMO

Don't think that is a question anymore. He is learning a great deal with Backs and Frolik. But he adapting everything in such a fast pace. Amazing IQ and maturity. His dad must have done something special for him as a mentor / a friend.

Your own words about Monahan betray you and demonstrate why we should refrain from making such hyperbolic pronouncements. Both of these players are still extremely young, and I expect we will continue to see some dramatic shifts in each of their developmental trajectories. Tkachuk looks amazing and is proving to be an excellent pick, but it is naive to assume that he will not have periods when he will struggle, like Monahan.

haha yeah sorry bad attempt at joke was bad. Just seeing the thread bumped gave me flashbacks of the constant discussions on the topic of sending him down. Not that I think anyone who thought he should be sent down was wrong at the time, there were very good points made on both sides.
I'm just glad that he has taken the opportunity to grow and develop. He worked his butt off to prove he should be here, and even though it was unsure at times, he has grown by leaps and bounds after getting the nod to stay. It's that kind of maturity that makes great players.

It would be icing on the cake to have Rasmus Andersson > Joulevi in addition to having them watch Tkachuk turn into a physical first line forward.

They are already having nightmares of both Ehlers and Nylander being on pace for 60-70 points while Virtanen was demoted to Utica with 7 points in 24 games at the AHL level. They could have had a dominant line of Tkachuk-Horvat-Ehlers with the Sedins as the 2nd line for years to come with an improved Baertschi making for great LW depth, and almost complete their rebuild / retool before it got truly started. Instead Benning things happened.

It's not about their trajectories. It's about their attitudes. I love Monahan, obviously. However a guy like Tkachuk who will go to war for his team. Not only will he go to war for his team but he will drag his teammates with him. As seen with fro and backs. That's the type of captain I want.
