He passed the Rocket on the all time goals scored list with his first goal last night as well.

Congrats to OV. Quite the achievement, and he' still pretty young and has time to add to the totals. In the end, he might not have the point totals Crosby will. But he'll be up there with the best of the best when it comes to scoring goals.
The last 11 years have flown by. Instead of arguing who is the better goal scorer between eras, we should all savour these next years of his career, as it's going to fly by

The first few years he was in the league I wasn't a fan of Ovi, He was selfish, not a team player, an evil Russian I thought.
I was wrong. Oh so very wrong.
Congrats Ovi, here is to 1000 more!

Looking back at the drafts in 2000 it doesn't look like there will that many more in the next little bit. Of course there is Crosby who is sitting at 983 who will probably hit 1000 some time in February. After that the next highest point total is Spezza who is sitting at 837 and Malkin is at 804 (Staal is sitting at 816 but I don't think he makes it). Kane is at 708 and between him and Malkin probably account for the next player after Crosby to hit 1000 (for players drafted since 2000).

Adjusted goals per game (hockey-reference)
Ovy: 0.74
Lemieux: 0.67
Richard: 0.67
Bure: 0.66
Bossy: 0.61
Bobby Hull: 0.61
Crosby: 0.60
List isn't exhaustive, as I couldn't find one that was actually adjusted g/gp

And how many Mike Bossy games have you watched to have this opinion? or Rocket Richard and other past legends?
It's ok to say a current player is better then a former player. It really is.
Ovie will go down as one of the best all-time.

I hope he hits 50 again this year. What a gem that guy is.

Staal just turned 32. He's 181 points away, and currently playing at a point-per-game pace. Even if he finishes with 70 points this year, he'll only need to score 150 more to break that milestone.
Assuming he comes back down to earth, I think these would be relatively conservative numbers for him:
33 years old - 55
34 - 50
35 - 45
I think he easily breaks it, barring career ending injury. I think Staal's really underrated. For a decade, from his Sophomore year on, he was a near point-per-game player. He had a very bad season his last year in Carolina, but this years 38 in 40 is closer to his career average than his last year, by far.

I don't think he easily breaks the 1,000 point barrier. He needs almost 200 points and he's 32. The massive dropoff in performance happens to all players, and his could be around the corner.
I wouldn't be shocked if he makes it, but it won't be a cakewalk for him.

For Staal, this year has been a bit of a resurgence. He definitely was trending down and is why he is signed for 3.5AAV. He could buck the trend and keep putting up these numbers and easily get there in the right situation. Prior to this season he was starting to show that decline so I am not convinced.
The season when he is 35 will be a UFA year so a team will have to be willing to give him that role, which may not be the top line minutes he is getting now. I just don't think it will be that easy for him.

He's on pace for 78 points, expecting him to put up 55 next year is a massive dropoff. If he were to continue his current pace, he would reach 1000 slightly after his 34th birthday.
At the same age, he'll have more points than Marleau, Hossa and the Sedins. 150 more than Elias. It will take a Brad Richards type of dropoff for him, or a Paul Kariya type attitude (i.e. leaving the game while still producing but not caring about 1000) for him to not get 1000.
