Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Pretty much the first guy to make the guitar sound downright evil. And that's pretty cool in my book.
Oh yeah, Frank Zappa was one helluva player too.

WTF, maybe I missed it but nobody mentioned Hendrix? I alway's liked the galloping sound of Kirk Hammett , but admitedly I know nothing about guitars or the art of playing the guitar.

This guy here in austin Josh Waldrip plays guitar for a band called Exit the King... He has to be the fastest guitar player I've ever seen... The mp3's dont really do him justice but you can kind of hear on Case for a concealed weapon... This is loud crazy metal so if you old guys can't handle it...

Considering Joe Satriani taught Kirk Hammet how to play he's definitely up there. But I have to go with John Petrucci.

Since we're including dead guys, Terry Kath was one of the best ever. Hendrix called him the greatest guitarist that had lived.

the whole question of "best" is somewhat interesting, since i think there is a big difference between guy's who can play the guitar fast (ie, Satriani) and guy's who can make it sing (Page).

Was kind of surprised to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard's name mentioned. He along with Eric Clapton and Santana have got to be in my top 5. Not sure how would round out my top five though probably Daron Malakian and Chuck Berry.
Honorable mentions Prince, Urban, Paige, and Wilde.
#1 if he were still alive would be hands down would be Darrell Abbott.

My personal favourite is Alex Lifeson.

That live SNL clip of Prince blew my socks off. I had no idea the guy could play guitar like that.

I'd like to give a nod to pioneers Scotty Moore, Bo Diddley and Duane Eddy.

great thread. Lots of players mentioned that I wold have on my list (Clapton, Hendrix, Page...) Glad to see Tony Iommi on the list here, he's underrated. Dave Mustaine slings a mean axe. I'm watching the Crossroads DVD as I type this. Joe Walsh is great too. Too many to list here. I saw Satriani 16 years ago, quietest audience ever, their jaws were all on the ground watching Joe on stage.

Here's my question though would you go see him again? I've seen Eric Johnson, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani you know all the guitar virtuosos live and although what they do is amazing I am usually bored with it after the first 20 minutes... and I am a guitar player, a bad one, but still I am one...
