Yeah, having one of the best and most marketable players of the past 9 years in the ASG is simply laughable. LAUGHABLE.

The surprising thing is Smith's numbers are actually very good - except for the wins. Shows how bad the rest of that team is.

The National Hockey League is a business not a non-profit charity. Why do people act like the NHL exists as a public institution? Obviously the All Star Weekend is about the money because everything the NHL does is about money.

Toews isn't an all star this year. He is 7th on his TEAM in scoring.
He is only there because the NHL thinks he is one of the best 100 players to ever play in the NHL and they are announcing the list at the event.
Spoiler: He isn't one of the best 100 players ever in the NHL.

It's arguable if he should be there. It's not laughable. One of the most recognizable names in hockey should be at one of the premier marketing events. It makes sense.

I'm actually surprised that only 1 Oiler made the team, I swear the way media is shoving that team down our throats I expected Talbot, Maroon, Drysaddle to make it in.

Toews isn't even one of the top 3 on his very own team let alone one of the best in the league.
Most over rated player in history.

Then change the name to "Exhibition of Popular Players's" instead of "All-Star Game".

Jonathan Toews said Panarin, Anisimov and Hossa all deserved to be All-Stars ahead of him.

There we go. Looks like Toews agrees with most here. Yet he's obligated to go. Let's not crap all over him.

God I hate it when people say this like it is some sort of amazing insight.
Literally everything the NHL does is a money grab. So is everything any company that is selling a product does.
Oh no! The NHL has created an event to market it's product and/or make some extra money. Those bastards! This is supposed to be about the sanctity of the game (that grown men are paid millions of dollars to play). How dare they!

LOL not even close as that title is reserved for guys like Rick Nash. He's not overrated as he's a great leader and delivers a solid two-way game. He's possibly slightly overrated offensively I suppose but he's got multiple Stanley Cup rings to back up his worth. My only gripe is that it's an all star game so you want to bring your most skilled guys to which he is not as it's akin to Backlund representing the Flames over Gaudeau.

Last year's event was super fun, I don't understand why people are crapping on it. The old ASG was terrible and a snooze-fest, this 3 on 3 tourney is great.
Anyway... Frans Nielsen? And you guys are all complaining about Toews? How is no one talking about this? How is it not Zetterberg, or even Vanek? Hell, I'd take even Larkin despite his weak point totals, at least it'd be entertaining. Frans freakin' Nielsen?!

i find it amusing that the NHL promotes 3 big events, all star game, winter classic, and stanley cup finals where probably the worst hockey is played.
