Interesting. So what's the benefit though? Just better sound quality?

Give her some funked up music, she treats you nice
Feed her some hungry reggae, she'll love you twice
The girls don't seem to care tonight
As long as the mood is right
FM - no static at all

So do the current FM stations continue broadcasting, just in a different format?

I guess that'd be a business decision.

Its just the switch from analog TV to digital HDTV. They keep broadcasting but on the digital spectrum on different frequencies. Old radios/sets can't recieve the new digital signals. Like when we had the switch to digital TV, many stations didn't have the funds for upgrade to make the transition and closed shop.

It would be nice if AM960 changed to FM. Sound quality is annoying

I can listen to AM960 here in Lethbridge. I can't get any Calgary FM stations until I'm just north of Claresholm. So, I don't want AM960 to convert.

I picked up 660 news one morning in Chilliwack BC (I had driven out the previous day and it was on my presets). It had lots of static but I could make out what they were talking about.

AM radio does have great range, that's true. It would be awesome if they could simulcast off AM and FM, so that if you're local you get a crisper sound.
I've listened to FAN960 as far south as Dillon and as far west as Penticton. I've literally even heard snippets in front of the Vancouver golf club on a clear day.

When I was a kid in New Brunswick, there was a huge collection of radio equipment on the NB/NS border. On cold nights we could radio from New York stations all the way down to Florida sometimes. I remember listening to Chicago Bulls games in the MJ era from the local Chicago station all the way in Sackville, NB. It was kind of neat. It was actually a kind of phenomenon. Some said they could even hear radio in their sinks at some points. A local did a documentary on it. It was pretty interesting.

I guess I shouldn't mention shortwave radio... I love you ionosphere!
I get awesome Fan960 up here in greaserville in my truck. at home, I use TuneIn radio.
On topic, when I was in the UK the car radios were "digital", and it was awesome when driving around that they changed channels automatically but stayed in format and content if possible.
On FM radio, or any format really, if no one is listening or has better equipment, many will have already migrated to the digital format.

edited as the UK radios were indeed DAB. I'm guessing that AM continues in Norway?
