I would suggest he has it back again, and will receive the majority of the starts rest of the way. Johnson really controls the situation and playing time will be predicated mostly on his play...

So, by your very description here you would seem to agree with me that Johnson is still NOT the clear starting goalie in Calgary, since his work load is very much performance based and the leash is short.

I predict Elliott gets about 10 starts rest of the season. If he gets more than that, it will mean Johnson is not playing well or is hurt.

I disagree. The other way that Elliott will get more starts is by playing well. If he has a great game or two then I am pretty confident the coaches will want to see more from him. Riding the "hot hand" is how the goalies have been deployed thus far, and I don't see why it wouldn't continue down the stretch—and this is the very definition of a goaltending tandem. I guess the difference between you and me is our confidence in Elliott: you seem to have rejected the possibility that he will play better in the back half, and I am betting that he will return to form.

We have lots of prospects in the system that look good, chances are one of them is a player in 2 to 3 years. You have a better goaltender, in Johnson, who can be had on a shorter term deal for reasonable dollars. Elliots chance for a lucrative long term deal have evaporated with Calgary, he may get one from some other team this summer saying his numbers in Calgary were a result of a bad team.
I have always thought the Flames either extend him because he is playing so damn well or he goes some where else in the summer. Flames won't enter a bidding war for him in the summer even if he has a ridiculous good second half.
After expansion there will be more clarity and opportunities in the crease for Calgary.

If Elliott's performance in the second half is a mirror of his play in the first 42, then I absolutely agree. But I am not confident that he will not look much better down the stretch, and there is still an outside chance that he works his way back into a contract conversation with the Flames. There is still plenty of hockey to be played.
(As an aside, I cannot see how Elliott could possibly marshal a convincing argument to another team that his poor numbers were the result of being on a bad team—especially relative to how much better Johnson has performed and factoring into consideration the Flames' mid-level ranking in goals scored, goals allowed, and possession.)

You are arguing for the sake of arguing. Of course if Johnson craps the bed, Elliott will get more starts. I am clearly stating the net is Johnson's to lose. And it will take more than a bad game to lose it.
No one is comparing Johnson to Carey Price who has a much, much longer leash.
The topic of the thread is re-signing Elliott. Are you really suggesting you want him re-signed at this point? Or that he deserves to be playing more?
Yeah of course if his performance does a 180 that changes things. How is that not true for every single expiring contract on the team?
Elliott has been a significant disappointment. There is really nothing to dispute.

Would Semyon Varlamov work, I would do it, if it meant we could pry one of Duchene or Landeskog.

Would you re-sign Brian Elliott?

You are the one who challenged my description of the situation, and I'm not sure why since you essentially agree with it. Bizarre.
Anyhow, no, I don't think the Flames will re-sign Elliott, and I believe it is far too early to pursue an extension with Johnson.

You have stated that it is "preposterous" that Elliott should be relegated to backup duty. And that Johnson should not be considered the starter since his hold on the position is "performance based".
I disagree.

Every regular season game he's played, Elliott has had a number of moments when he has no idea where the puck is going. Chad, on the other hand, tracks the puck extremely well. Maybe he's not the long term answer - I think it's foolish to say either guy is, at this juncture. But presumably they want a young goalie in the 1B spot next year.
I'd look into what the Stars would pay for him - I see a low cost fit there

Is his save percentage above .900 yet? Come on, let's not sign guys to extensions after every win.

I think this is the real Brian Elliott though, not the guy we saw the first half of the year. I watched a lot of the Blues last year and this is the Elliott I thought we were getting when the team made that trade. So yes I would re-sign him.
Now if only we could get last year's Brouwer too.

Really pumped on how well Elliot's playing now, but no need to discuss this now. You see how the season ends up, look at the goalie situations with the expansion draft, and go from there.

Yes, as of tonight it is.
And he's been playing good lately.
.917/2.40GAA since Feb 1st
.908/2.44GAA since Jan 1st
I was like you, not paying attention, thinking one game didn't make a good goalie. But then I actually looked at the numbers.
He's worth keeping.

He's been playing great, but this is still the same guy that had a sub .900SV% almost the entire season. Let's see a few more good games before we start jumping on the extension train.
