Too many perimeter shots, not enough traffic in front of Miller. Monahan and Bennett line need to start contributing much more than they have.

He was way too deep in his crease on the third goal. Granlund had tons of net to look at. I could have put a wrister by him there.

He was screened on the last goal and the first was a bit of a fluke.

Bad luck + losing the goalie battle will end up with you losing the game on most nights. Elliott needs to be better moving forward.

Clearly you weren't following the GT. Plenty of blame going around.
Do you think the Canuck players played perfectly? Miller still made several great saves. Elliott couldn't make routine saves.

It would be nice to see at least one skilled player playing with Stajan instead of just grinders.

Was at the game and I enjoyed it. Seats were right behind Miller in the 1st and 3rd so got my money's worth seeing lots of action.

Yeah players make mistakes every game and that is why you have a goalie. If Flames gave up 13 breakaways I would hope less than 4 would go in.
Let's hope it's just one of those games. Even if it is, I would say we need a goalie to get hot rather quickly.

The Canucks had two shots on goal in the final 16:43 of the hockey game. One of them went in.

Don't you think Treliving needs to keep an eye on the goalie situation and not just close his eyes and ride the 2 goalies he has? I don't care about the record, the Flames goaltending has looked soft ever since Johnson cooled off. It would be a shame to see sub par goaltending torpedo another season.
|
It is a marathon and I am a realist. The fact of the matter is that Elliott has been uncharacteristic ally bad, the Flames are tight to the cap and not at all well positioned to make a move in net.
They will ride it out and will be fine. Average goaltending might hurt them this year, but this team is not built to win now—it is built to win in another two or three seasons.
Of course Treliving should—and I believe he will—do whatever he can to make improvements, but you can't honestly believe he is now, under the present conditions going to aggressively pursue a goaltending change, do you?

For goalies who have played 15 or more games (45 goalies total):
Elliott ranks 36th in GAA with a 2.95, and 45th in S% with a .889.
Johnson ranks 13th in GAA with a 2.34, and is tied for 15th in S% with a .920.
People can say the loss tonight isn't on Elliott, and that's true to a certain point. Losses are rarely 100% on any single player. However, Elliott has been awful this season - and I think that's fairly hard to argue at this stage.

I wonder if the flames would consider calling up David Rittich of Gillies. Couldnt be worse than the way Elliott played tonight

I hope Treliving has the foresight to see the risk in our goalie play right now and that absent Johnson's hot streak, it has been less than average. Am I suggesting he acquire a goalie this evening? No. But the Flames are barely in a playoff spot. Could he acquire a 3rd option for a late round pick? Could he get the real number one he wants right now, if prices have come down since summer? I sure hope he is looking at that right now. Given this franchise's history, making playoffs is important. If it isn't, the off-season moves don't make much sense to me. I don't buy the built to win in 3 seasons premise.

Most would disagree but I would look at the possibility of moving Gio while he still has value.
