So apparently this was Johnny's reaction after he scored and it's fantastic.

"Boring" and "grossly incompetent" are not synonyms.

Outside of about a five minute stretch late in the third, last night's game was unbelievably boring. Which isn't a bad thing in this case. There wasn't a single moment in the entire game where I felt worried the Avs might do something.

I think he has been steadily regaining his game and playing better for a while now. Last night was one of his best games of the season for sure, but it isn't the only good hockey he's been playing lately.

With Wideman as his partner, Brodie ends up handling the vast majority of the board play behind their net. He is often one against 3 and as a result has been turning the puck over more than usual. Of course, he has also made too many terrible giveaways this year, but I think because of that, people are also criticizing him too much for the lost board battles when he's out-manned.

Last night, Wideman was really solid defensively. He won some puck battles and got things done in his own corner. That allowed Brodie to be far more aggressive skating and moving the puck up. And that is the catalyst of what makes him great.

Brodie is fine.

Pretty disappointing 2nd gif. Kept waiting and waiting for her to face plant or fall on her ass but to no avail.

Her falling would mean she failed. Flames did not fail!

One thing that I noticed last night that I really don't like and that I don't think is effective is Tkachuk cherry picking at the far blue line on the powerplay when the puck is in the Flames zone. I didn't see it produce anything last night. I'm not sure how long they have been doing that but it needs to change. I noticed that during even strength play he tends to drift out of the zone early as well.

On the other hand, I love the breakout on the power play with Johnny playing defense/trailer. It gives him a great opportunity for a fast break into the offensive zone.

The powerplay is 1st in the league in the past 6 weeks. I don't think we as fans need to be criticizing it...

This has become common practice for many NHL PP systems. You always have an option for a quick pass to the corner so everyone can skate in onside and then receive the puck. It's not an option that we commonly go with, but just having that player there means the PKers can't put all their pressure on the puck carrier entering the zone (which is what we sucked at before).

Perhaps a guy playing that high on the PP forces the PKers to be stretched, thus allowing for a cleaner breakout.

The Flames PP is on absolute fire right now, so they are doing something right.

It's funny you mention that. Wasn't too long ago that most of us (myself included) were bitching about how ineffective that play was. Now, it looks like money.

Exactly ... I've coached that too.

You can't forecheck at all shorthanded if you have a guy up by your blueline, too stretched to bottle anything down. Essentially makes it a given that you have a guy with speed coming through the neutral zone.

Besides the mentioned guy parked at the opposing blue line, there's usually one forward that shoots up the opposite wing as soon as Johnny picks up speed, creating the threat of a quick pass. It gives him 3 reliable options, which are difficult or damn near impossible to defend all at once. Carry it in himself, dish to the blueline guy, or fire it across to the streaking opposite wing player.

Yes, but that was obviously lack of execution as opposed to an ineffective system.

Way off topic, but in regards to the pic above of Monahan/Gaudreau/Gio celebrating...

I hate where all the teams have put the NHL 100 logo. Low on the arms like that. Looks awful.

^ I find it blends in with the arm number as well, making it harder to identify players from distance.

They probably put it there though because the Pens, Flyers, Kings and Blues are all already wearing 50th anniversary patches on the front. The Leafs have a 100th anniversary patch of their own. Edmonton has the Rogers Place patch, etc.

I read somewhere that the NHL wanted it on the same place for all teams. With all the shoulder patches and logos and crap different teams have they likely didn't have a better option.
