The City has unfunded plans for a multi-purpose fieldhouse to be built at Foothills Athletic Park, near McMahon Stadium. The development of this public facility requires an investment of $202 million, based on $94 million for the fieldhouse building (including a 400 metre indoor track and FIFA-sized field) and $108 million for associated support/sport spaces, site clearing, site redevelopment, parking and project soft costs (consulting). Please note: figures are based on 2012 estimates.
I'm assuming the associated support/sport spaces includes the other amenities in the master plan.
because the proposed standalone Calgary Fieldhouse is essentially a half stadium by itself.
The standalone proposal has seating for about 10000 and has the goals of hosting IAAF championships and other tournaments.
And it is also envisioned as serving the whole city of Calgary not just a small town or a suburb of a bigger city.
So the plan is to build a small indoor stadium for the purpose of hosting track meets and maybe a lower level pro soccer team? 200 million seems like an awful lot of money to spend on something like that as well.
I'm not getting why building a central, multi-use super field house is a great thing for the public. It seems like the public would be much better from some very good field houses built in more suburban areas (where most young athletes probably live) dedicated to amateur sports.
Trying to lump that into a place that shares parking and space with a professional football team, and hockey team makes it even more useless as a field house, and provides very little value for amateur ahtletes, etc.
Not to mention, the fieldhouse is actually only a component of the whole complex the city has envisioned. Based on the foothills master plan, it will feature the replacement of the Norma Bush arenas, as well as the foothills aquatics centre. As well additional gymnasia spaces and weight rooms.
The problem with the term "field house" is that there's no single definition of what it means. Originally, it was used to describe the equipment shack next to a sports field. Then, the term became most commonly used for large gymnasiums, usually at Colleges in the US. This is how the term is still most commonly used.
One thing that has always bugged me when I hear comments about all the different smaller cities that have "field houses" when Calgary has none, is that they're not talking about the same thing.
If you look at the buildings mentioned, most of them have about the same amenities as the Talisman Centre (or whatever its new name is) in Calgary.
As far as I can tell, none of the ones listed have a full 400m running track (most are 200m, which is the same as the Talisman Centre and the Jack Simpson Gym) and the new field house at Commonwealth in Edmonton is the only one with an indoor turf field, and it's only a half field.

Yeah, it seems like field house has grown to mean pretty much any centre that is indoors and has sports facilities with or without spectator seating. It can be pretty much anything from a small community style gym facility to a 50k stadium, lol.

True, but most of the the American ones I've been in and I think most that you've listed have a field house type surface if not turf. ie http://www.connorsports.com/fieldhouse

Edit nevermind. I didn't mean to quote myself. I need to lay off the cold medicine.... Carry on. I'll just leave it there for amusement, and I won't continue arguing with myself anymore.

Wow those Foothills and Glenmore Athletic Park redevelopments are fantastic. This is the type of infrastructure this city needs. It has been almost 7 years since the plans came out and not a single inch of progress has been made on either of the projects. Calgary is so far behind on sporting infrastructure it isn't even funny.

Remember a few years ago when Ken King was making fun of the Oilers arena issues? Didn't he say that the flames would do it differently, wouldn't use the media to negotiate, but come out when a deal was done with all the I's dotted and T's crossed?

Ken King: You know how that go, right? Gave myself all these little rules about what I wouldn't do. Like I told myself I'd do a lot of #### to get public money, but I swore I wouldn't ever trick. So, after I'm tricking, I thought, "This ain't so bad. I'll do this for a while, except I'll make some more rules for myself, like I'm going to use condoms, and I'm never going to go with more than one guy at the same time". Well, let's just say that there are some things that I told myself I would never do. You know what my disease did to my rules, right? Whatever it is you tell yourself you won't do to get that public money, you're pretty much making a list of everything you will do as soon as your inner addict tells you to.
Training room activities wouldn't be impacted, neither would activities in the gymnasia.
How so? At a minimum, ingress and egress would be impacted significantly. If the facilities even remained open to the public during those times at all.
I remember using a location for physiotherapy that was part of McMahon Stadium. Any idea if it's open during Stamps games?
There's actually a dedicated 2026 thread already. Also, is it just me or do almost all Calgary Herald links not work? All I get is a blank page when I click the link, which seems to happen a lot.
