There's probably a difference between 3D and normal as well regarding the CGI. I saw the regular non-3D version and Tarkin stuck out like a sore thumb to me. Leia looked fine however.
Either way still an awesome movie!
On the 3D note, I found the 3D
to be very subtle. Didn't see anything really fly out of the screen, just depth.
I never would have thought we would still be talking about the CGI. Not that I think this is a bad thing nor am I ragging on those who have a problem with it, it was just such a non factor for me that I never thought it would be a hot topic.
It really does make me wonder if different copies/theaters had different quality versions.
Yeah the CGI was a non factor as far as I'm concerned.
I've been a starwars fan for many decades, but it still irks me to this day how easily trained and armored storm troopers are defeated by sticks, rocks and punches to the helmet.
I've had a few scraps in hockey and was never had those results.
Is there a explanation anywhere in starwars canon about this?

I couldn't give a rip about the cgi, I don't know why it is such an issue other than there was so little else wrong with the movie that people need something to find fault with.
My big beef is these damn 3D movies are so dark! someone figure this out quick. There are lenses on the projector so it's dark enough, add the glasses and you can barely see the screen! Grrr. Fix this issue and maybe I'll notice the CGI is a problem!
I also did not know this was a prequel to Ep 4 going in lol.
And I just feel the need to reiterate that I absolutely zero memory of Tarkin at all going into this film as I hadn't seen ANH in like 15 years, but could see almost immediately that he was a CGI character.
I did go and watch the OT over Christmas though, so seeing Ep 4 within a few days of seeing R1 really helped me understand the need to include the CGI characters.
On a similar note, it was really great watching Ep 4 right after because it ties in immediately starting right with the text scroll!

Yeah. RotJ was kinda lame because of that.
Whoops! AT-ST slipped on some logs! How adorable.
Let's crush it's head with a couple more logs. Wood can smash heavily armored war machines that stand up to laser blasts right?!
Little furry koalas can organize themselves against a heavily armed and organized battle group right? Bows and Arrows vs blasters, check.
I find myself rolling my eyes during that entire sequence. It should have been Wookies with bowcasters.
I realize the storm troopers and their flimsy looking plastic outfits were born of what was available in the 1970's costumes but I really wish they would scrap the fisher price plastic and go with metal or some sort of space age looking resin in the new instalments.
The debate about the CGI is interesting. But as someone who has spent countless hours playing video games where each and every big game tries it's hardest to have the best CGI possible, this film did pretty well. I knew Tarkin was CGI going into the film, so I knew right away what to look for. My buddy had no idea he was CGI until I told him after. Leia looked pretty decent as well.
No movie/video game in history has ever had perfect CGI. Because it's impossible to fully copy a human's motion. Similar to how we will never be able to fully and accurately animate the flow and movement of water. We can get close. But it's not going to happen. Ever.
It comes pretty close in R1. But again, we will never ever achieve perfection. The most beautiful video game with the best video card and processors running it still don't look perfect. Life of Pi, Jungle Book, and every other single CGI animated character is easily recognisable as fake if you know what to look for. Maybe it's because we all spend endless hours in front of computers and graphics that we will never be fooled.
But in the end, the CGI for either character was sufficient for the film and I don't think the movie should be rated any lower simply because someone is able to tell they are fake. It's funny reading some people say ''but it's so obvious he/she was fake''. Well no ####. Because it is fake.

I watched TFA again recently. Now, I was pretty stoned, but I swear I saw several hints that Rey could be Snoke. I fell asleep about halfway through cuz it was like 3:30am so I want to watch it again all the way through to see if this theory stands up.
I don't agree. But my hope for the movies is rey falls to the dark side a kyle Ren ends up on the light side

And she would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those darned teenagers.

That is certainly possible. Materials and structures react differently to difference projectiles. So something can be made to withstand a laser blast or small bullet but not be able to withstand a broad battering ram weighing hundreds of pounds that contacts a good chunk of a flat surface.
now the automatic explosions are something else entirely...

That was always a problem with the film. I choose to look at it as the storm troopers not really wanting to shoot teddy bears or something. But yes it's a problem. The Ewoks were always the biggest issue with the first three films.

Never say never! We might be living in a computer generated simulation!

Scooby Doo huh?
I need to find some time to watch this again. I picked up on something early and it fit for the first half of the movie. It's probably not the case, but I'll let you know once I watch again.
One part in particular when Leia is talking about Snoke, it sounds like she says "she" in reference to Snoke. I replayed it several times, and it really sounds like they left it ambiguous. I will have to watch it again.
The other thing I noticed is that Rey is very interested in people's reactions to her. Watch her eyes during the interactions.
The fact that Snoke is a hologram and everyone has speculated that he is not as large as appears.
Snoke mocking Kylo that he was being mind tricked by a "girl"
Those are the big things that stand out from memory. Obviously there was more to it than just these.
Just saw Rogue One recently and thought this was the best one so far. I enjoyed it a lot and liked how it ended. How the heck did no one survive? Awesome.
