A little number on Ryan Poehling joining his brothers at St. Cloud State:
Quote:
But rejoining his brothers on the ice — the trio were teammates for Poehling’s freshman and sophomore seasons at Lakeville North High in Minnesota — was only part of the reason the 17-year-old hit the books hard while others soaked in the sun.
“They were an influence for sure, but not as much as people think,” Poehling said. “They had their say in it but in the end it was up to me. That’s what made it best. It was my decision. At the end it came down to me putting in the work and I wanted to.
“I wanted to put in the work to get here. That was the decision I had to come down.”

My post from three weeks ago above. Seems like my friend is right about Hischier after watching him in the world juniors. Sounds like he is a lock for top three in the draft at this point.

Agreed. I've never seen Patrick or Liljegren play, but Hischier was very, very impressive this tournament. He totally outplayed the other '17 draft eligible players. Seems like he has another gear for big games too which is invaluable.

I watched this guy before Christmas and what a stud,he would look awesome on our back end for years to come.He was a man among boys during game i watched and played a nasty game just like his old man.Only difference between him and his old man is he has way more skill.Really hope he is around when the Flames pick we have alot of skilled guys/prospects on our back end but it would sure be nice to add a guy with some jam to his game.

Man would I love to have a Foote Soldier on our blue line. We are really missing toughness back there right now.

I think he'll be long gone unless the boys really tail off here. I see this team picking between 17 and 30. There are only 3-5 defence worthy of a 1st rd grade this year from what I have been reading. So I don't think we really get this Foote. Perhaps the other foote next year?. The Fwd foote is a talent in his own right too.
haha, As a consolation, the forward depth with size and winger potential is high again this draft, so it could be a great draft to add to the other winger we got last year. A guy like Tippett, or Popugayev, or Matt Strome, or jason robertson He could have the jam to thrive with Tkachucky or compliment the top group! Alas, I understand about Foote, I was hoping we could find a way to pick up a defender prospect like this to play alongside the brodie's, gio's, kyll's, andy's, hickey's and foxes. However I agree with this sentiment of need for the flames.
A big snarling right handed dman with adequate skill is sorely lacking. I thought Gudbranson would have been a good get, but what would we have had to give up? Something like that, like a Rhett warrener i hate to say, or a Reggie in his hay day. Brent seabrook? That tough two way player, who makes people skate with their head up.
Look at the pressure teams like San Jose impose upon, Columbus did the same thing last game, but Bob arguably had a better game.
Steve Santini is a prospect I have kept my eye on, he plays for the devils system. If there was a way to swing trouba without giving up the world. I thought hamonic would really be a stud on our blueline. Alas these guys all would cost a fortune.
I say go BPA this draft like always, but if this jUuso valimaki is around i like the sound of him. He's got size, smarts, good communicator and defenders pluck. He's a lefty though, but I'm less concerned about the handedness than the player for this group. Nicholas Hague? He's a lefty but big potential, he's probably gone like Foote when it's our turn to pick. Artem Minullin is an interesting name. He plays in swift current, and he's big rh, with some warts but some real translatable skills to being a defense prospect in the current style of NHL we enjoy. His warts are mostly strength related and should improve with pro training regiments.
Ultimately, I think a trade is the best route, to compliment the existing pool, instead of waiting a few seasons for this draft's prospect to pan out. If we could do another dougie deal, I would be all for trading our pick.

This comment is actually in regards to the 2016 draft, but I don't feel like looking up that thread:
What a joke that amateur scouts managed to scare each other enough to let the #2 ranked player and #1 ranked Dman in November 2015, Jakob Chychrun, fall to Arizona with the 16th pick only 7 months later. Chychrun not only made the Coyotes out of camp, but he looks like an absolute stud, IMO, all before his 19th birthday.
The scouts that picked the 4 defenseman ahead of Chychrun should be ashamed.

Yup, hindsight is 20/20. I remember being very upset about Fox being picked over a falling Sean Day in the 3rd, but several months later Fox looks like he could have elite offensive potential whereas Day merely looks solid. After that round it was mostly a crapshoot anyway.

The draft isn't won six months in, but it definitely seems like mistakes have been made by a few teams. Arizona did an unreal job at the draft this year getting Keller and Chychrun.

I hope he isn't. Not that I have anything against Foote... he just looks like a guy that will go in the top half of the draft and I really hope the Flames don't pick in the top half of the draft.

Not so sure that is how it worked, but it is fair to say Chychrun looks to be outperforming his draft position. I wouldn't say "stud", based on limited viewing, however. Time will tell.

Yeah it is still too early to make a proclamation on Chychrun vs the d-men that were chosen ahead of him.
As I recall it, many felt he was the most NHL ready d-man in the draft. What caused him to fall was his poor draft year where he didn't look exceptional. This caused many scouts to question whether his ceiling was as high as others.
I mean Luke Schenn made the Leafs straight after being drafted and looked like the Leafs had hit a home run. Alex Pietrangelo taken a spot ahead of Schenn took 2 years after the 2009 draft to make Blues full time. Now in hindsight ask who NHL GMs would prefer.
It is great Chychrun is doing great, but way too early to make any conclusions about the 2016 draft.

After Nico Hischier's strong WJC, I polled 5 head scouts on if in conversation for first overall with Nolan Patrick. Universal answer: No.

It's interesting that barely playing this season due to injury hasn't hurt Patrick's ranking - he hasn't had a chance to hurt his value the way Chychrun did. Makes me wonder if Chychrun would have been drafted higher if had missed half the season last year.

I still like Sergachev more than Juolevi or Chychrun regardless of what any of them have done in the NHL to date.

What I remember about Chychrun is in the Under 18s he had all the talent but made poor decisions. Probably by trying to do too much. By playing a more conservative game, he's a top young player.

New rankings are up here (updated Jan. 1):
http://futureconsiderations.ca/top-rankings/
Figured this would be curious for you guys, too:
Quote:
The release of Future Considerations’ Winter ranking for the 2017 NHL Draft signifies we have come to the half way mark in a season of evaluating the talent this year’s class.
Over the past five months of evaluation, we have come to an obvious conclusion: The 2017 draft struggles to live up to some of the previous classes that boasted star power headlining and dotted the ranks of those recent crops.
