To be fair Matty's already mentioned that anytime such a subject comes up his dad trots out the 500+ NHL goals which is always the conversation ender. So far.

Not that anyone is really concerned about that they way he is playing right now.

Tkachuk sits 6th in rookie scoring.
Also out of the top 17 rookie point getters, Tkachuk is logging the least ice time per game.

He's got to be up there on the toughest competition faced as well just being on a line with Frolik/Backlund.

It is worth mentioning that Tkachuk is the second youngest player in this list, next to Patrik Laine.

Just a hunch but I think Tkachuk is going to be staying with the Flames

Heck of a rookie class this year in general.

It's just nice to have our 1st round picks actually pan out, after all the Fatas of the past.

Flames have been very fortunate with their top 10 picks since the rebuild began in 2013. The 4th overall pick has been pretty much a safe bet since 2010 with the exception of Reinhart in 2012
Johanssen
Larson
Reinhart
Jones
Bennett
Marner
Puljujarvi
The 6th pick however really has not been as sure fire with some questionable choices in that timeframe and I would argue the Flames definitely got the best 2 players on the below list
Brett Connelly
Zibinejad
Dumba
Monahan
Virtanen
Zacha
Tkachuk

Take out Reinhart and Bennett is looking like the least desirable player on that 4th overall list. So the Flames didn't get that lucky with it. Hopefully he can show some progress soon.
Zib, Dumba, Monahan are all players. Virtanen is a question mark right now. Zacha has looked fine in NJ and Tkachuk fine in Calgary. None of those players have flamed out.

Virtanen is not a question mark and I think most Canuck fans are ready to tell you that he's a big ol bust.
And it's quite pre-mature to say that about Bennett just because he's been inconsistent this year. Are you forgetting that he was injured for a full year? Safe to say that slowed down his progression but I don't think it's ever stalled since being in the NHL.

I am not sure of the value of comparing 4th overalls in different years. To me, the question is whether the Flames should have picked someone else who was actually available at the time. Happy with all of Monahan/Bennet/Tkatchuk.

-Ryan Johanssen had 12 points in a 40 games lockout season as a 20 year old; Bennett has 18 in 39 at the same age
Adam Larsson was great to start the season in Edmonton but his December was terrible, the handful of games I saw he was garbage.
-Reinhart - Barf
-Seth Jones, looks to be really finding his game
-Marner - the young rookie winger is having a heck of a season.
It's darn tough to compare all these guys since anyone from 2013-on is so early in their development. Ryan Johansen was probably being questioned about "showing progress" too at 20.

I'm not sure about the various evaluations going on here. Bennett for starters, has been progressing well, even as a 4th round pick. He plays centre, and sure, he hasn't been an explode onto the NHL seen type of 4th round pick, but not sure how anyone can be dissapointed in how he's progressing 1 and a half years into his NHL career unless they had unrealistic expectations of him.
The Flames have been fortunate / potentially jump started their rebuild faster than what could have been expected when they actually bit the bullet and started for these reasons in ranking order of impact (in my opinion):
1. Johnny Gaudreau being the player he is - That was the equivalent of getting another Top 5 first round pick out of no where, maybe even the equivalent of a bonus 1st overall pick.
2. Giordano late bloomer / leadership skills - Gio becoming one of the better D-men in the league, and seemingly one of the better leaders (obviously this is speculation given I'm not in the dressing room) was probably not something we all saw coming.
3. Hamilton acquired for the 15th overall - again, this might have been debated by many on here early last year, but hopefully his play this season is silencing that. Adding another young top D man with the 15th overall was the equivalent of getting another Top 5 pick. Some good GMing there.
4. Monahan's development - he's been popular to pick on this year, some of it justified, but much of it a factor of the new contract and unrealistic expectations of a young centre (see Bennett). Progression is not completely linear, and this guy has become a very good NHL center very quickly. I don't think anyone would have expected what we've got out of Monahan when we picked him at 6 a few years back.
5 Tkatchuk - I think everyone was excited when he fell to us this year. He's been better quicker than expected I'd suggest.

Above link is an article on Zacha's mediocre season. Virtanen is struggling in the AHL. Connelly has been a huge bust. Zibenijad and Dumba have been pretty good players. Monahan easily has been the best of that bunch and it is not really close and I feel Tkachuk os the closest to him and he is half way through his rookie season
As for the 4th overalls it is pretty early but I have Bennett over Reinhart, Larson, and Puljujarvi pretty easily. I would say it is a toss up with Johanssen but I do prefer both Jones and Marner to him. In 5 years these rankings could easily change. Drilling down further in Bennett's year the 3 players taken after him all look pretty bad in Dal Colle, Virtanen, Fleury. Some nice picks came shortly after with Nylander, Ehlers, Larkin but I wouldn't trade Bennett for any of them

Ehlers and Pastranak. Although nobody would have said Pastranak before the draft. I'm still confident Bennett will be worth the pick, but his IQ has become questionable for me. Which is sort of scary.

With the benefit of hindsight...maybe. Pretty sure CP would have lost it, had either had been picked at the time (although Ehlers was a possibility, I suppose).
Bennett might be a victim of high expectations. I still think he will get there, but it is frustrating to see the inconsistencies in his game right now.

I can't see I've seen anything in Dubois, or Joulevi that makes me lament the Flames falling a spot in the draft. Certainly would have been nice to be in Winnipeg's spot and move up for Laine. But in no way can I complain about getting Tkachuk.
IIRC there was a lot of talk about the Flames moving up from 6 to 3. Still early, but it's looking pretty astute to stay and 6 and pick the guy they got. I do think playing with Frolik and Backlund does help, but Tkachuk isn't causing those two any undue stress.
