Isn't everything on this forum technically useless?
Sometimes people don't think twice about fuel economy and what that means for their bottom line. An exercise like this can open people's eyes.
I would highly recommend the Altima for instance as a mid-level car with decent options and amazing fuel economy. I'm a pretty tall person and the car is comfortable enough even for me.
The truck is where my heart truly lies though. Plus it has active fuel management so it's not as bad as the V-8s of old. It shuts off 4 cylinders when cruising and not towing or hauling.

City/Combined - ~12.5l/100 on premium, ~14l/100 on reg
Highway - 9l/100 on premium, 10.5l/100 on reg
EDIT I do about 23,000 KM a year on avg, with a fair bit of highway between CGY-EDM.

F-150 ecoboost
averaging 13.9L/100km for the past year (includes some towing in the summer)
I assume I drive about 15,000 km a year, so I burn about 2,085 L a year.
I figure I could get my fuel economy down to 13.0 if I removed my truck nutz, gun rack and took out my 13" lift, but then how will people idolize me?

My Ford Flex does 12L/100km +/- 0.5L depending on how much "highway" driving we do during a tank. We do about 16,000km per year in the family hauler.
My winter beater does 11L/100km and only gets driven about 3000km per year.

Car A gets 30 MPG
Car B gets 25 MPG
Car C gets 35 MPG
Say all of them drive 10,000 miles in one year. Car B looks like it should be worse than Car A by as much much as Car C is better than Car A.
Car A uses 333 gallons
Car B uses 400 gallons -> 777 more than Car A
Car C uses 286 gallons -> 47 less gallons than Car A
That is what I call a dumb measurement.

Four years of exact mileage and fuel purchased. Lifted 2008 GMC Sierra. Looks like the average price of fuel over those fours years was $0.95/L

For the model I purchased (ES 300h) since always - they use the EXACT same engine as the Camry/Avalon Hybrids.
I just wanted the extra comfort and technology that Lexus provides, otherwise I would have went with the Toyota

I have 3 cars (really 4 but the one I don't drive) they all give me about 10L/100km real world average. In total I drive about 10,000km per year. My environmental argument for not buying a new more efficient car is by not buying new I won't be contributing to climate change via energy used to produce the new car. Probably a weak argument.
As for Lexus hybrids needing premium I thought all of them took regular fuel unlike some of the gas only versions. Pretty sure the Atkinson cycle engine doesn't need or can benefit from higher octane.

I actually rented a 2016 Altima when I was visiting family over Christmas. I had it for a week, and drove probably 200-250km in it. It was a pretty good vehicle. I think it would be a solid daily driver for most people. Wouldn't be a good choice for me, given that the primary purposes of my cars are a) getting to a ski hill full of ski equipment in the winter or b) having fun in during warmer months.

Interesting. I have an RX350 and I was under the impression that the hybrids took premium because the RX450h does. Sort of surprised that the ES serious would be significantly nicer than the Avalon, actually.

That is insane mileage for an F-150.
I had a 2013 F150 ecoboost, and I tracked every drop of gas and every km. over 84,000kms, towing about 9,000kms (8,000lb trailer) and a mix of city/highway, my average was 18.0 l/100km, and my absolute personal best was 12.2 l/100km, which I did exactly for one tank of gas out of 174 and I don't have a heavy foot.
I am driving an F-250 Diesel now and am getting about 16.0l/100km (although that is only 5000km in) but with diesel being 10c/l cheaper than gas right now, I am not complaining.
The one difference may be usage, I commuted in my truck about 50% of the miles so that may have driven my mileage down.

2012 Ford Focus SE w/ Ecoboost - I get about 7.3L per 100 kms for my average driving. Pure highway driving is about 6.5L per 100 km.
2008 Kia Rondo - averages about 11L per 100 km. Transmission only being a 4 speed hurts.

2014 Acura TL. I do about 12.5L / 100Km. Takes premium. I drive about 18,000 Km per year.
So rough calculation, 2,250L per year. So really, the tax costs me about $101 per year. Not make or break, but that's still about $8.50 more per month more. Every little thing adds up, and I find this is a needless tax.
