I was wondering where I could find a cheap laptop. I've been looking on eBay, but I'm hesitant to get one from there without knowing exactly what I'm getting into. What I want would be a CD-ROM drive, wireless and ethernet capability, enough speed and memory for word processing, internet use, and digital pictures. I'm studying abroad next semester, and it would help out a bunch. I don't really care if its used or not, just as cheap as possible. I'm not really into all the technical stuff, so I don't know what to look for as far as all that goes. Any suggestions?

If you want cheap try dell. I wouldn't buy from them. I bought a PC and had it a week and it wouldn't connect. I hooked it up right. It also depends on what kind of procceser you want to. If you want Intell Pentium, Cential, or Anthlon. Not sure about the Cential name. I'm drawing a blank on that one.

I wouldn't really want to spend much more than $250-$300

Good luck finding any laptop that cheap. Even if you did get a used machine, it would be probably closer to 700-800.

Keep in mind folks that I think sbailey is in the US....$300 USD @ 1.25 is $375 CAD.... A little light, putting another $200 CAD in would get you something better.
Comes down to what you'll use it for. Word and websurfing will drop your requirements a lot. Check Tigerdirect.ca for refurb lease returns, I've seen good Thinkpads in the $500 CAD range.

Yeah, I'm in the U.S. That totally slipped my mind. I thought that might be a little lowballing it by me, but thanks for the suggestions.

I've been looking on ebay for a cheap laptop where I can store digital photos and use it as a GPS interface. I can't even find one that will run my GPS software for under $600 CDN.
You might need to up your budget. Laptops are considerably more expensive than desktop pc's at the same specs.
Slightly off-topic, does anyone know if a LCD screen from a laptop can be wired up to be used a desktop monitor?

I think it can be, but I am not sure how. My laptop monitor is shot, and I was told by a buddy that I can just hook the laptop up to my LCD TV/monitor...but like I say, I am not sure how to do it.

I saw an ad for the Laptop Depot in the Calgary Sun the other day and they had this spaceship looking laptop for $199, I'd imagine it wouldn't be much more than a toy with an original Pentium ~233Mhz chip in it
