This is where the old school me and the modern pragmatist conflict.
On one hand, that hit was a tiny bit late but what is what I would call 'finishing your check'. That's ingrained into me, and something you have to do especially in a very competitive and meaningful game. The hit was high into his chest, perfect to knock your opponent over and make an impact. No head shot, led with the upper arm/shoulder, square, with the opponent's chest facing you.
On the other hand, that hit was a tiny bit late and higher than it needed to be. In fact, that hit really had no impact on the play, which should be the goal of any counter-play you make in the game. It was more than 2 feet from the boards, which only spells trouble when you knock a player back. And when you hit them high like that, they are going to fall backwards head first. It's a dangerous hit all the way around, and the kind we are trying to eliminate with the kind of knowledge we now have of the human brain and high impact sports.
Even with all that, I think it should have been a 2 minute boarding penalty. Intent to hit and use the boards, but no intent to injure, and I don't think it was late enough to warrant an interference call.
Sucks that Myers looks to be gone for the tournament, both for Canada and the player, but injuries happen no matter how clean you play.
