If I was an Uber driver and was busy with trips down town I would be kinda pissed to have to drive 30 minutes or more to pick someone up in the suburbs.

Yeah, that makes sense.
I'd be willing to pay some sort of premium for that though.

I think that with UberBlack you have that ability but we obviously don't have UberBlack running in Calgary.

Friday night I didn't get surge pricing, but Saturday night around 8pm there was 1.2x surge pricing - ended up being about $8 to go from my place in Sunalta to Hotel Arts.

Classic Uber:

Their self driving service got shut down after one day because, among other things(like running red lights!), they didn't bother to get a permit.

This is what happened with us last weekend. The gf's car was in the shop Monday and Tuesday, we tried forever to book something for her for work, many different times throughout both days to no avail. We're in the Richmond area too, it's not like we're all tucked away in the periphery of the city or something. Now she's totally soured on it and wants nothing to do with it going forward, as it just seems super unreliable.
I'm a little turned off myself, as someone who had never attempted to use it before until then. Just seems pretty bush league, not really sure what all the fuss is about frankly. I feel a lot more comfortable with cabs at this point.

Is there any hope of getting an Uber on New Year's Eve? I don't care about surge pricing, as I'm not going far, but with the cold and snow expected, I want someone to actually show up.
Edit to add: Do they have the Uber sticker in the window here? I've only used it in LA before.

I was talking to my Uber driver yesterday and he said the drivers get a big bonus if they drive certain hours and accept 80% of requests tomorrow night. So I bet the whole fleet will be out tomorrow.

Be very careful using uber on NYE. Surge pricing could be up to 10x which you may not notice if drunk and desperate to get home. Lots of horror stories from last year of people paying ~$1000 to get home.

Yikes, that surge price is ridiculous!!
Took Uber for the first time (in YYC anyways, have used it in the states before) last night and had a minor hiccup. The destination I was going to is a new pub in Auburn Bay and the GPS didn't have the right location on the drivers app. I had to direct him on how to get there. Not a huge issue as I can imagine the GPS coordinates just need to be updated and add on that its a newer area/pub I can see that being an issue.

They don't list the surge multiplier anymore. They give you the total trip price, which you have to explicitly agree to before accepting the ride.
There was only one story of $1000 last year, an Edmonton man who had Uber drive him around for an hour. Surge pricing is a concern and probably makes it more expensive than a cab, but anyone who takes an hour long Uber trip and pretends they were never told the multiplier (then) or total cost (now) is dumb. It's impossible not to notice now, drunk or not. That same trip would have cost $250~ in a cab, so it's not even like the multiplier was outrageous.
Most importantly, if you notice the rate seems really high, wait 10-15 minutes and try again. Surge peaks and disappears pretty quickly.

I'm not too worried about surge pricing. When I used it in LA, I was going back and forth between the airport and Manhattan Beach. It was usually less than $10, but one time it was showing as $30, which I assume was the surge pricing. It was very obvious.
As for NYE, I'm going from a friend's house in one neighbourhood to me house in the next one, so even if it was 10x, it wouldn't be crazy (likely $50 vs $5, which might be worth it if it's cold and snowy enough).

Also, surge pricing is almost always basically negated by not having to ever tip your Uber driver. Which I love.

Since when don't they list surge pricing?
Few weeks ago I used it and it said 1.4x surge.

Interesting, just tried to use uber and it says no cars available in my area. I gather its very limited geographically, Willow Park is not so out of the way.

I think this is worse for the user, especially if you're from out of town and don't really understand what a typical cab fare should be for a distance. Hidden surge pricing gets accepted more.

When leaving the ducks game on Thursday, tried to get an Uber. They were available but Ride Please was $6 cheaper. So I assume it was surge pricing.
I took the Ride Please. I love Uber but RP was quicker and cheaper (at that time)
