Do you think anyone in the NFL head office acctually knows where or what Edmonton even is?
They are looking to go to big cities but yet they will head to a city of 800,000 some people in Northern Alberta, yup that sounds like a great place to promote the game.

I don't think it's so cool for the CFL.
If a NFL game happens in Toronto it will only encourage them to try harder for a NFL franchise, meanwhile dissing everything CFL. When this happens interest in the Argos goes down and the whole CFL gets in trouble.

They have a commercial out here in the GTA for the Fan 590. It has Bob Mccowan promoting his show, but during all the commercials he just sits in the stands of skydome and talks about certain issues that are often talked about. He addresses the NFL team to Toronto issue very sttrongly saying basically "Anyone who thinks there will be an NFL team coming to Toronto doesnt understand the NFL. The NFL is driven by network US network TV contracts and there is no network intrest in Toronto, therefor there will never be a team in Toronto"
Not word for word what he says but real close. I think he is dead on, Toronto can hope and dream for an NFL team forever, I dont think they will ever have one though.

The metro area is over 1M. Other than Montreal and Vancouver, what other options in Canada exist? Commonwealth is a great stadium (heads and shoulders above McMahon).
On the same note, do you think anyone in the NFL head office knows where or what Calgary even is?

No not really. Not implying Calgary is any better of a choice. I would die if either city got any consideration let alone an acctual game. They have many other countries as possible locals and Im sure the Canadian dates would be limited to TO, Vancouver or possibly Montreal.

It won't happen in Calgary.
During the NFL strike the American NFL broadcaster[NBC?] was broadcasting CFL games. They aired a game in Calgary where the Stamps stunk out McMahan stadium and all of N. America. They vowed they'd never be back.

Yeah they probably do. It's not like we have two ignorant Americans sitting in a room deciding where games will be played, this will be researched and discussed. I am positive Edmonton's name would come up in discussions. Whether it happens is another story however.

Not to mention, although the stadium seats 60,000 it really can't handle crowds of over 45,000 in terms of concessions, washrooms, etc.
The game would have to be in September as well due to temperature considerations.
As for BC Place, it might have an outside shot but they would have to improve the turf in a big way. It's nowhere near the standards the NFL would expect.
|
Agreed, I don't this idea gets outside of the Skydome, but if it did, I would guess Edmonton gets it.
BC place is one of the worst facilities around ... lots of seats, which is in plain view during any CFL game, the rug is awful, concessions are inefficient and could not curculate air to save its life

There is probably an owner in Denver that could help them out with that.
Bashing cities because they are not NFL worthy is silly. Frankly neither city is NFL worthy ... btw the comments about if you understand the NFL then you know why it wouldn't work is bang on.
This isn't hockey ... nor is it baseball or basketball, it is a superior model that will not comprimise its self to put a team in Canada. Why take on FX risk? play in a poor stadium in a country that is allergic to public support into sports facilities?
Plus the money isn't made at the game, it's made on TV, and NBC/Fox/CBS could care less about the Cdn market.

Argo's are a minor league operation in Toronto to begin with. They shouldn't even be in the big stadium. An NFL team plays there and they could move to some university stadium.
I'd love to have a Canadian NFL team to cheer for and don't think it effects the CFL at all. CFL is a summer hotdog league --- It's like going and watching the Hitmen instead of the Flames. Very entertaining and sometimes heck it's better than the NHL but it's still the minor leagues.

There was rumors spreading last year down in the states that there would be a game in England as soon as this year. I see England as the #1 choice of a game, with huge soccer stadiums..and a certain owner of a certain Tampa based NFL team owning a certain soccer team based in Manchester England.

Yeah a flight from the East coast of the US to London isn't much longer than a flight from Miami to Seattle. Given that you could cram 80,000 plus into one of those soccer stadiums and than charge big money, I can see London being the first choice in terms of money. The only thing any Canadian city brings to the table is that the travel would be easy on the teams involved.

Man... I know it would be bad for the CFL... but if Toronto/Vancouver could land an NFL franchise they'd instantly be my favourite NFL team. That would be too awsome. Of course, they'd go on to suck for the next decade or so and bring up the rear of the league before eventually folding.

Yep agreed. Canada is a lame market sportswise and would be a risky investment other than in Toronto. Expos and Grizzlies down the tube -- F1?
NBA and NFL should be looking at Europe/Asia for expansion. NFL could slowly move into the market as it looks they are but IMO the NBA could very rapidly move into some foreign markets and with great success. Basketball has universal appeal something that football and hockey will very likely NEVER have. Surprisingly so to a lesser extent does baseball. For instance the pro team in the city in China where I lived was becoming increasingly popluar and had a TV contact.
I hope Toronto gets in on the action!!!

Ha ha ha, indeed!
I'ld rather watch paint dry! Honestly, I think the Canadian game is 1000 times more enjoyable to watch. An exhibition game here or there wouldn't be such a bad idea, but I don't think you could hold the attention of Canadians that long to have a franchise. Canadians need action, fast, exciting sports - like hockey. Not a chess game on turf.
