I don't see any money set aside to pay for their boondoggling of the PPA deal. Didn't they offer up $1 billion for that? Or does that draw form the unintended consequences fund?
That's probably in the massive number for large scale renewables.

They also plan on using carbon tax income to pay for an electricity price cap...
Quote:
The Notley government will impose controls over the price of electricity in 2017 and use cash from the carbon tax to cover electricity market increases.
Looking like we will spend that carbon tax several times.

Over the next 5 years? In 2.5 years the NDP will no longer be running this province and I expect the carbon tax will be ####-canned by the CP or whatever party replaces them. I don't understand why Notley is trying to shoehorn all this in when it's ultimately going to be nothing but a big waste of time and taxpayer money. Reminds me of Chretien with the Koyoto Accord in that he had to get it in before he was out just to say he did it regardless of the huge waste of money it amounted to be. If they played their cards right they would have done things very gradually to not upset the apple carts in hopes they get another term.

I doubt any incoming government kills it. If Canada is pushing through a tax we might as well colllect it locally and keep the money in province. We also needed a PST to have a sustainable tax system rather than rely on resource revenues. We also should pay lip service to climate change to avoid the backlash Harper faced.
So given the above the carbon tax is here to stay.

So I've been wondering who all these people are that get the rebates, an the math just doesn't work out for anyone I know. I dunno, maybe it is because all my friends are middle class? What I think is happening, is that the majority rebates are going to go to retired people, which is a little insulting since they spent their lives on the free carbon train, and now they get paid for it. It may even be profitable if they get the full rebate, and live in group type homes and no longer drive. I'd be interested to see the demographics of the rebate. Obviously a touchy subject, because some seniors don't have much money.

Considering that Trudeau basically adopted Harper's targets, shouldn't Trudeau be facing the same backlash? Oh but wait tax.

Nope. Abolishing the carbon tax will be the election promise that gets the next party in office. Comparing carbon tax to PST is apples to oranges.

As was GST and yet it's still here. I think this tax is here to stay. It's not just money, it's political. Shows that AB is serious about the environment. Right or wrong...

This is an interesting question to me. Although I think the CT is a useless endeavour for doing anything to stop Climate Change, I'd support it if:
1) The tax proceeds went to funding our massive deficit
2) The poor were protected from the spike in necessities of life
3) Our pipelines get approved because people think we're doing something
I don't have much hope for 1 with the NDP in power, and it looks like 2 is taken care of. The real battle is whether our carbon tax will assuage the enviornmental hysterics, and I don't know if it will. Clearly there's a subset of extremists that will oppose TMX to the end, regardless of Northern Gateway getting axed, and regardless of our incoming carbon tax. You can argue that Trudeau only approved it because of the CT but that's just posturing, it was a good project three years ago and it's a good project now. Northern Gateway was as well. Will the Americans, Quebecers, Natives, and Extremists be more amennable to our pipelines because guys like me are paying $200 more to drive my car and heat my condo the same as I always did? I'd honestly love it if they were, but I'm skeptical.

Dion, are you going to be making money here?
*ducks*
According to Flash_Walken and iggy_oi only the ones that choose to live modest and mediocre lives will get the rebate.
Those that strive to achieve something in their life should pay the full costs of the carbon tax.
I tend to think that the environmental groups are going to double down now, they got the Carbon tax, but now they're going to go even harder to stop the pipelines and kill resource development.
The Carbon tax is relatively meaningless in terms of environmental impact its lip service.
The Conservative Leadership debate on the 8th is going to be really interesting for me as the leaders are going to lay out a bit of their platform ideas.

If we continue down this path we are going to get a Trump style revolt.
The fact that Notley is too stupid to see this is quite revealing.

Unless Notley does something like calling the people who don't agree with her deplorable or morons out loud I doubt we'll see a Trump style revolt. I know a lot of people are angry in Alberta and scared in Alberta, but I haven't seen the polarizing lines like in the US election where it was actually party warfare that caused an actual split in the country.

IIRC the GST didn't bring about this type of anger because frankly it was replacing a hidden tax in the MST. But I could be wrong cause I'm old but Chretien that old lying bast$$$ ran a platform on cancelling the GST and when he got in office he kept it.
I'm sure that will be the case in this provincial election. "We'll get rid of the carbon tax", followed by a "Whhaaaaaat? we were just spitballing there bra"

The interesting thing about a PST in Alberta, is that the government would have to hold a referendum before implementing the tax.
It's part of the "Alberta Taxpayer Protection Act"
Quote:
Referendum required
1 A member of the Executive Council may introduce in the
Legislative Assembly a Bill that imposes a general provincial sales
tax only if, before the introduction of the Bill, the Chief Electoral
Officer announces the result of a referendum conducted under this
Act on a question that relates to the imposition of the tax.

Notley was our Trump style revolt. Alberta wanted to punish the CP and this is the sole reason we are dealing with this. Zero chance the NDP lasts more than one term.

If the parties are split there is a chance.
If there are only 2 options on the ballot, the PC/WRP should crush the NDP.
