I took my 6 year old tonight, and it was pretty obvious the movie was too confusing for him to understand much beyond good guys vs bad guys. Without spoiling it for you guys, I had to explain why the movie ended the way it did but it was a good lesson for him. This topic make make some parents uncomfortable but i'd wager thats a minority of them. I do not think this movie is more intimidating to a child than TFA. If your child managed to get through the Rather in TFA, they won't find anything in this movie scary. I also don't agree the violence was anything beyond what you've seen in past films. My boy still enjoyed it though and loved all the space battles and other star wars esque elements.
That being said, this is without a doubt my favorite star wars movie. It made me cheer out loud, and hit the nostalgia so much better than TFA did. It also answers so many universe questions without going all midichlorian. Thats an accomplishment. Had goosebumps a few times as well. Fanboying hard right now!

It was a pretty mature movie, not really a kids movie. I'm not sure I'd take a kid that young.

NON spoiler thoughts..
It's better than Episode VII. Much more satisfying IMO.
On par with Return of the Jedi for me. And I am more fond of that movie than most. Feels straight out of the original trilogy, absolutely loved it.. Maybe because it appeals more to the adult like I am now, while doing service to the kid in me that loved the originals.
Ep. VII for all its fan service still didn't quite feel like Star Wars somehow, and was a complete rehash plot-wise, whereas this a) did the fan servicing better because it got the aesthetic/details of the SW universe down to a T (!) and b) felt like totally original material.
I was grinning ear to ear for probably 80% of it.
8.5/10 (And I'm a harsh critic fwiw)
Only docked for reasons I'll discuss in the appropriate thread.

I'd say it's alright for kids 10+
5 is too young for this one. A lot less family friendly than TFA.

How does it comapare to Revenge of the Sith in terms of the intensity of violence. Mainly the scenes where Anikan slaughtered the trade federation and killed padme.

but but she died of a broken heart and lost the will to live.
Probably the most disturbing scene in revenge of the Sith was Anakin screaming on the operating table as the droids operated.

This was by far the most violent Star Wars movie and it's not even close.

They don't show it happen, but when the little kid at the temple asks him "master Skywalker there are too many, what are we going to do?" And then anakin pulls out his lightsaber startling the kid followed by the scene with yoda and obi wan seeing all the dead younglings on the floor, that was pretty dark for a star wars movie.

Is anyone else in this situation? My girlfriend hasn't seen much Star Wars but she liked Force Awakens (although probably not as much as me). Is this good as a standalone movie?

My wife doesn't like Star Wars but I've forced her to watch all of them.
She enjoyed Ep VII enough, but hated this movie.

I took a 10 year old and 2 8 year olds. There wasn't anything I'd say is very disturbing to them. It was really long and a tad complicated for the 8 year olds. I loved it.

I can see that. It would be hard to like this one without being pretty into ep 4.

TFA and R1 are the only two that my wife has seen.
It required a bit of background setting on my part ...but she has thoroughly enjoyed both.

I think its exciting that the standalone movie was completely different from the regular Star Wars movies in terms of tempo, characters and overall presentation.
I mean its going to be tough to continue to have the quality that Rogue 1 had.
I mean you look at whats coming up and have to wonder now about the story lines
Young Han Solo movie - There are a lot of stories that could probably be told, but my guess its going to be a movie about Han's time at the Imperial Academy up til his rescue of Chewie and getting the Falcon. We could see a cameo by a young Lando in it.
Ben Kenobi movie - I have this feeling that in Rebels we are going to see Kenobi soon as they are pointing that way. So do they want to tell another story of crazy Ben watching over young Luke. It seems to be logical because Ewan has said that he'd love to play Ben.
Bobba Fett movie - My guess is its going to be a greasy underworld movie with Bobba chasing a bounty. Fett got a lot of stories in TCW series as a young bounty hunter who actually wasn't a bad person, but was driven by the death of his dad. Would they get Temurea Morrison to play Fett. It seems logical if you think about Bobba as a clone. However the problem is by Return of the Jedi. Bobba would probably be a guy in his early 40's if I do my math right
There's also so much source material that I would love to see.
Clones - We know that all of the Clones didn't go along with order 66. And the Clones were certainly more sympathetic then the future Storm Troopers that we saw in ANH. They could shoot straighter to. I would love to see a movie where there's a Clone uprising that forces Palpatine to stop recruiting Clones and go to a conscription Storm Trooper Core, we saw hints of this in TFA.\
Palpatine story - They even have some excellent source material in the Darth Plagueis novel. The story of Palpatine as a young man who becomes the most powerful Sith Lord ever would be an amazing story.
Darth Vader - Again I'm selfish. We've seen hints of a darker more brutal Vader in the Rebels series and in Rogue 1. But the immediate aftermath of his conversion from Anakin Skywalker to the Vader we see in those show would be great. Showing his first mission in a post Order 66 GFFA would be an incredibly brutal movie where the bad guys utterly win would be great. Again there is an exceptional book that would be a great piece of source material.
Darth Bane - I do love the idea of a Old Republic type of movie and what better character then the Sith who destroyed the Sith order and rebuild it with the awesome rule of two. Considered to be one of the most powerful and intelligent Sith Lords who realized that brute strength would never defeat the Jedi and set the events of a future a 1000 years later could be a very cool movie.

That's a pretty safe bet considering they've already cast Lando and announced it. Donald Glover to play Lando

I'm worried about the Han Solo movie.
Part of what Is Star Wars to me is grandness of scale and meaning to the Galaxy of each of the movies. I worry that the Han and Chewie road trip movie will seem insignificant relative to the rest of the universe.
