Just finished "Born A Crime" by Trevor Noah. Really good book about his upbringing in both apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. Good mix of humour and life lessons in each chapter.

Reading "High Crimes" by Michael Kodas. Very well written non-fiction tale about the commercialization of Mt. Everest and some of the very unsavoury things that go on - theft of equipment, selling faulty items, guides that misrepresent their qualifications, greed, and doing whatever it takes to bag the summit.

Finally got through the very long "The Mountain Shadow" the highly anticipated sequel to "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts. Obviously not as good as the original but still an engaging philosophical read about a violent man trying to leave his life of violence is a quickly changing Bombay. I believe this is part of a trilogy and am definitely looking forward to the next one.
As far as a non fiction recommendation goes I absolutely loved "The Aliens are Coming" by Ben Miller. It is a great read that explores the conditions for life, why we have not encountered aliens yet and how humanity should go about trying to find aliens. He has such an amazing writing style which makes these complicated subjects funny and easy to understand. I could not put this one down. In comparison I tried reading "Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs" by Lisa Randall and never finished because it was so boring.

Just finished No Man's Land by David Baldacci, not too shabby. Every one of these new thrillers does make me miss Vince Flynn more and more though.

Tranny by Laura Jane Grace and Dan Ozzi is a fantastic read. I'm a huge fan of Laura's music but I think the book could appeal to people who may not be familiar with her music too.

Finished "The Ledge". Another mountaineering book about a climb on Mt. Rainier that ended up with two guys falling 80 feet down a crevasse and ending up precariously situated on a narrow ledge which stopped them from going down even farther. Some similarities with "Touching the Void". It was overall a good read.

Isnt that like...200 pages? Its a short story, I read it years ago.
Enjoy it though, and then watch the show. Although they're nothing alike.
And then read 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.' It was the inspiration for Blade Runner.

Meh. I downloaded a bunch a books over Christmas and I didn't like any of them. All The Birds In The Sky, The Blood Grows, The Gunslinger, The Darkest Hour, Little Big, Full Fathom Five and The Dog Said Bow Wow. I just couldn't seem to get into any of them.
Sharp Teeth, Station 11, Wool Omnibus, Red Country, Before They Are Hanged, and The Peshawar Lancers are the last thing I recall reading that I actually liked.
Looking for a book recommendation for this evening. I'm a reading mood, but I seem to pick out lacklustre stuff.

Started a new book - "Curse of Narrows" about the Halifax explosion. Pretty riveting so far. Visited the exhibits at the Halifax at the maritime museum, and the Canadian Heritage Minute piece. The book fills in some of the gaps.

Currently reading The Terror by Dan Simmons. It's a historical fiction/horror novel based on the Franklin expedition. I've read a few of his books before, so I know he can write. Quite enjoying it so far. It's nice to have writers like Simmons who excel at different genres and are willing to take chances.

The Obelisk Gate was great (next book after The Fifth Season), haven't read much fantasy in a long time but I really like the world building here (in addition to it being a good series).

Did you finish this? Is it worth finishing? I keep waiting for the interesting part to start, and I'm like half way through, normally I have to finish a book to find out what happens, but I'm really questioning the commitment here.

Three Body Problem - Cixin Liu
This one really has me engaged. Hard science fiction with some interesting theoretical science it. Translated from Chinese so it is interesting having the story based in Communist China. There are two more parts in the trilogy and I really look forward to it.
