I was at last nights game. It looked like a team that had 2 days off and hadn't kept sharp. Lots of little mistakes. Gaudreau in particular looked really off.
I didn't think Johnson looked all that sharp either. Might be that 3 point shots were all deflected, but I cringed every time they got a point shot.

But as Rick Ball noted last night, they have a bunch of giants in Tampa that do a good job of screening. And when your own D (Gio) tips it past you too, that can't help. Just a perfect storm really. Bad night.
Oh, and who expects Boyle to go forehand/backhand like that? No one. Not going to blame Johnson on that. The whole arena was leaning to the stick side when that happened.

On that note, is there a dumber rule than the 4 min minor rule? Whether or not a stick blow draws blood has less to do with the severity of the hit than the mechanics of application. The NHL application is completely arbitrary, and it drives me crazy. Either all high sticking penalties should be 4 mins or they should be 2 mins. Pick one or the other.

Reading the game thread and other posts, what do some of you people expect? Did you think the Flames were going to go on a 22 game winning streak? The Flames are going to lose some games. The guys who crawled back onto the bandwagon when we started winning are the worst.
Not like TB dominated us. Hockey is a game of inches, didn't go our way last night, deal with it.

And 1 loss doesn't mean accepting defeat.
It's complete crap that there are posters wanting to trade good depth players because of 1 loss following a 6 game win streak...
If you are going to be this fickle as a fan, then just hop off the bandwagon now because it's downright pathetic.

Hmm I never thought of it that way. I can get where the idea of the rule comes from though. If you just touch the opponent's face, obviously you should be penalized less than something careless enough to cut his face. I personally don't see an issue with the rule.

But the idea behind the 4 minutes is that the player put the extra oomph into the act which isn't always the case.

Was talking with a co-worker yesterday who splits season tix. He went to a season ticket holder event recently with his kids where they all got to skate on the ice. He said it was basically in ODR condition, really bad. Said he couldn't believe it. Is it just me, or should an NHL team in a frozen Canadian city have good ice? Just seems weird how it's so bad up here.

It would be a truly Lightning thing to blow out the Flames and then proceed to lay eggs vs the rest of our division rivals for their west coast trip. They lost to VAN 5-1 last week, so not hoping for much.
Swear this ####ing team exists just to troll Flames fans.

Completely agree, and cannot believe this dumb rule doesn't get more attention. It's completely nonsensical when no other penalty in the game is treated in this manner.

I like the rule.
The 2 minute penalty is essentially to force you be in control of your stick at all times.
The 4 minute penalty is punishment for causing an injury (not for "bleeding" as many believe)
If it was just a 2 minute penalty there isn't really as big of a deterrence IMO. IF it was just a 4 minute penalty it would be too punitive on the accidental high sticking incidents.

The refs enforce it based on blood though, which is stupid...and just another reason why NHL refs are a joke.

if you don't do it based on blood, then how do you determine an injury? doctor's note? x-ray? amount of rolling around on the ice and crying the player is doing?

I don't see why they don't use the same method the NHL uses to determine league discipline:

Have to add my two cents, Wideman has his time and place but it should not be against a team as fast as the Bolts. He simply looked out of place in that game....I'm sure Kulak or Wotherspoon would have been better in that spot last night.

I thought Wideman played pretty well, on a team that overall didn't perform well. He made a number of nice passes and didn't get beat, except on one pinch, which looked kinda flukey. He got trapped on a bad line change but that's on the guy leaving, not him.
Brodie scored but I didn't think he looked that great. Gio was kind of average for him. Jokipaaka got caught a number of times and he and Engelland didn't play that well IMO.
