Is it just me, or does he try to get him in the back and his stick rides up Dillons into his head? Clearly was trying to hurt him, but I don't think the point of contact was intentional.

This. The other Ottawa player hooks his stick up so it ends going off of the shoulder and into the back of his head. But I don't think he was trying to hurt him, didn't look like he hits him very hard.
Not sure this should get much of a suspension, he got 5 and a game so maybe one or two more.
I should clarify and say I didn't think he meant to 'injure' him. Just give him one in the back so it stings a bit. But because of Dillons stick it turned out to be a dangerous play.
I couldn't believe I watched two segments of Friedman and that other guy and neither of them pointed it out.
The ref is standing right there and has his hand in his butt and his eyes who knows where. That is what's wrong with NHL reffing. Something like that happens and only one ref calls it.
Anyone notice that since fighting is down, stick-work is up? This was always the argument that the players made, yet all we're hearing is how equipment needs to get better.
I'm against the staged fights, but this is the kind of garbage that can be eliminated if you know that you have to face the music. Look at Dillon...he gives him a look and says something when Hoffman should have been picking up his teeth.

This. A lot of times nothing gets called because all the zebras are just standing around looking at the other to see if he is going to call it, then nobody does. The officiating in the NHL is so beyond terrible.

Do you have anything other than annecdotes and bias to suggest this is true.
Perhaps the more likely answer is there is a much bigger focus on head shots. And every game is televised so you see everyone of these plays now. Go watch a game from the eighties rather than remember it and see how little respect was out there.

That's an argument proponents of fighting in the game have been using for years despite the fact there's always been stick-work in the game. Hoffman was retaliating for a hit he didn't like in the moment. I don't think having a goon on the ice would have made a difference.
The stick-work thing could be anecdotal, and maybe I am just more aware of it since the Gaudreau injury, but it seems that players can't have the puck without getting hacked and whacked.
I understand that this was a retaliation, but it was a retaliation to another cross check.
Regardless, I think there needs to be a crack down.

I 100% agree, that was the biggest thing that stood out to me watching that clip. He should have clocked him.

The referee is following the puck to his right. I doubt you can see anything out of your ear either, so its easy to understand why that referee didn't make the call. This is why the league uses two referees now. The back referee did see it, and called it.

I am not sure if it is any better, but it looks like to me that he is trying to cross check him in the shoulders. Doesn't even look retaliatory to me - more that he was in his way, and by cross checking him he would gain separation. It looks like the Dillon's stick causes his cross check to ride up.
Probably worse some sort of suspension (players need to be accountable for their actions), but it is not Marty McSorley level of bad.
