Dale Tallon resumes control of the Panthers
Strange things going on in Florida
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Dale Tallon is resuming control of management duties and Hockey Ops in Florida. Panthers need to get back on track and stabilize things.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
There won't be an overhaul in Florida, but Tallon will likely want to make some changes and add pieces after the holiday roster freeze.

He has been pres. of hockey operations, but this infers that he is the main decision maker again. I will inquire.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Right. I'm talking day to day management and player personnel decisions. His challenge is to fix things.

Are they giving up on relying on advanced stats guys. It seems that the two franchises that bragged about moving into the future in Arizona and Florida are floundering.

Florida's management is acting like that guy who can't get over their ex. Doesn't realize how good it was until she's gone, so he goes mad and tries to get them back a few weeks later.

Well you know, you put your feet in the freezer and head in the oven and on average you're at the right temperature. So when things revert to the mean and the PDO evens out their team might be fine. By then you've killed a season or more though, and possibly a fan base and your career. Looks good on paper I guess.

weren't they so much into fancy stats that they even took A Finnish overager in the 1st round this year because he was some sort of advanced stats beast? I might be wrong, but I think that was part of their reasoning for the pick.
in any case, the moves of this organization in the past few weeks and months have been puzzling to say the least and the way they've dealt with coaching, ownership and structure has been nothing but shambolic. I feel for their fans.

Henrik Borgstrom was taken in the 1st by Florida. He is not an over ager and is playing in the NCAA ND has 16 point in 14gp as a freshman. He is touted as a Swiss army knife centre with high offensive upside.

Those definitely aren't the only two teams that moved "into the future". And those two teams have pretty much always sucked, it has nothing to do with them using analytics.

Henrik Borgstrom was born in August 1997 and therefore draft 2015 eligible, so yes, he was an overager.

I would say that teams may have a lack of patience towards these analytics guys. This Florida guy and it seems like the Leafs have put that young stats guy on the back burner with the old school hockey guys like Lamarillio and Hunter have more pull.

So far it looks okay, but he was definitely an odd pick. His aggregate ranking heading into the draft was #65, with a high of #34, a low of #137, and an avg. of #73.7.

So the guy who replaced Tallon and was coach/GM is just coaching now?

I try not to judge draft picks too much if the skill seems to be there, only because we drafted Jankowski and I don't want to be a hypocrite.

He was a top 10 EU player by Central Scouting and Bob McKenzie had him at #35. Taking him 23rd wasn't that much of a reach.
Anyway, this seems like a totally cosmetic move to assuage the fan base, who are apparently very pro-Tallon, and allows Rowe to focus on the coaching stuff for now.
According to this podcast (which is worth a listen, relevant part starts at 48:40) with one of the owners, Tallon was already pretty broadly involved with personnel decisions and it seems doubtful that Rowe wouldn't still be.
They don't seem to care much about titles in Florida in this regime.

I don't see what Jankowski has to do with anything here: "we" didn't pick him. I agree with what you are saying, but that doesn't change the point being made that it was an especially early pick for an overage player.

Thank Christ they put Tallon back in charge. I knew that when they pushed him aside it was going to be a terrible decision, and here we are.
Viola needs to stop messing with the team and let the hockey guys do their thing. It's just a shame that they fired Gallant because they've been much, much worse without him in charge. I would imagine that Gallant will be the first replacement hire when someone else gets fired this year.
I'm finding it hard to care about the Panthers with how disorganized and unprofessional they've been lately. At least Viola was able to admit he made a mistake and put Tallon back in charge.
Such a shame after such a successful season last year that had lots of fans coming out to games. Attendance has dropped off again this year.
