I tip $5 for haircuts.
15-18% at restaurants.
10% to delivery drivers.
$1 if I'm ordering 2 drinks or fewer at a bar. Round up to the nearest 5 if I'm ordering 3 or more.

$0 for take-out, fast food, coffee, sandwich shops, donair, etc.,

After living in Japan for over 5 years I don't think I can go back to tipping if I ever come back to live in Canada. In Japan there is no tipping yet the service standards are superlative. People working in service here get paid well enough for the skill-set experience required for the job and the cost to pay them is included in the price you pay from the menu.

I'm just gonna stop in this thread because you are doing a much better job of making my point than I am.

The bottom line is this. You don't work for free. The people who serve you shouldn't have to either.
The better service argument is another thing that bugs me about tipping. You should receive the same quality of service no matter how well off you are. Rich people splashing around massive tips should not be able to buy preferential treatment.

Well tipping is the custom in Canada so unless you want to be a total ahole you should go back to tipping if you ever move back.

I probably would since it is the custom, just my issue is after experiencing what it's like not having to tip and seeing that that system actually works is what will ire me with the whole experience of having to tip again.

This. Exactly this. Plus throw the guy who pumps your gas $5.

I can't believe anything less is even a debate.

My daughter's boyfriend pulls in (on average) $250 - $275 per night as a server at a mid-priced restaurant; and that's not including his hourly wage. He works an average of 5 nights per week as a Server because he can't find a job (graduated with a degree in Economics) in his chosen field.
He is ready to purchase a house and has stated that "this job is the best money i've ever made! It's unreal!"
If this trend continues, the universities and colleges will eventually catch on and offer degrees (or diplomas, certificates, etc). Majoring in Hospitality and minoring in Food Service.
It will happen.

I used to tip the gas station guy like $2 but one day another guy that was newer told me he rather not since they aren't allowed to keep tips and all tips go towards some charity I've never heard of. This was at a Co-op.

$5 delivery charge when a guy makes maybe 2-3 deliveries an hour isn't even minimum wage, after you figure in the cost of driving. Stop modelling yourself on Mr. Pink.
This. Delivery guys make less than minimum wage WITH tips. Not tipping them at all says a lot about that person IMO.

This is true, I always thought it was weird.

That's bullcrap. When I pumped gas, the hope of a tip was the one thing that kept me motivated to do an extra nice job on the windshields and work quickly. They take your tips and give them to someone else? What the crap? That sounds like theft to me....

Almost the same, except I don't tip the pizza delivery driver less than $5 ($7 if its cold outside)

Trust me that's just the newbies at co-op that got their first job, after a couple weeks you don't really care anymore about the 'rules' about not accepting tips.

So situation came up the other night, I usually tack on 10% for the delivery guy with a $5 min. so usually its $36 or so for 2 pizzas, and he gets an extra $5.(I use credit for everything so I never worry about rounding to the nearest $) The other night I ordered India food off skip the dishes, total for the 4 of us was just under $100 so tip would be $10, right. My buddy brought up why does that guy get $10 for doing the exact same job as the guy delivering 2 pizzas (2 boxes vs large brown bag to deliver). Made me rethink, so maybe it should just be a flat $5 delivery tip rather than %. (obviously larger tip if you are getting 20 pizzas or something but 2vs4 boxes is no difference)

I pushed groceries at CO-OP, and the English tourists would force tips on you, even if you insisted company policy was no.

Yesterday I tipped on one of those 10 min. airport chair massages, shoe shine guy and hotel housekeeping. Plus lunch server.

Personally, I like tipping. makes me feel good. I shall continue.

Well, we'll have to have a referendum.

Depends on the situation. Why is leaving a note cowardly? I have no problem telling someone to their face that they have done a terrible job but I'm not going to sit there for 15 minutes waiting for a terrible wait staff person to finally come over just so I can explain to them how terrible they are.

Thankfully its rare that I have gotten service this bad but it does happen occasionally.
