Assume both players have similar acquisition costs

Sharp shoots R and can play LW/RW. He has 3 cup rings, an Olympic gold medal and 8 20+ goal seasons of which he scored 30+ goals 4 times.

He has a slightly larger cap hit than Iginla, analytics suggest he is a far better 2 way player, but is less durable and gritty than Iginla. Both are the same height, though Iginla has about 15 lbs on Sharp. Sharp is about 5 years younger.

Both players are UFA after this season.
Taking numbers and aquisition cost out of it, I would probably pick Sharp over Iggy.

Come on dude. Everyone remembers how good Iginla was in his prime. We are talking about the merits of bringing him back this season so in discussion is his current level of play which quite frankly is a downgrade from Chiasson. Watch an Avalanche game. Trust me you do not want today's Iginla to be the way you remember him. Grant Fuhr and Mike Vernon where fantastic goaltender in their prime but when I think of them it's hard to get out of my head the way their careers ended with the Flames well past their expiry getting torched. I felt sad for them and I don't want to feel that way about Iginla.

I didn't even feel sorry for Vernon in his second stint. I straight up hated the guy. How many games did he lose singlehandedly that season? First muffin shot on goal was a guaranteed 1-0 lead for the opponent. That was a hard team to watch that season.

Speaking of Cammy, there is a guy that we would be better off targeting at the deadline if we are in it. My only concern is he has 2 years left after this season on his deal and has had injury issues as of late.

So you think that Iginla would sabotage the team with his 12 minutes a night on line 3/4?

Freddie Hamiilton and Lance Bouma must be leagues better. Truly the difference between winning and losing..can't afford to mess with a good thing.

Also eh..that's life. It's the little things sometimes, ya know? Why we can't let go of some of that crap in our basements. It was the good times. Same thing applies here. I think you can afford to have a 2 month sendoff to a guy that means a lot to a city without messing with the good thing they're building.

Not to say I think it's actually gonna happen. Brad doesn't give a #### about some beloved player that played for the organization long before he got there. Even people romanticizing the idea know full well how realistic it is. Doesn't mean it isn't fun to think about. Why don't you just let the people feel good?
Yes

Interesting thread, but very very unlikely Iginla would agree to come back to Calgary anyways - plus we are not a contender for the Stanley cup. My guess is however he would like to be moved out of Colorado long before the trade deadline so he is less of a rental to wherever he goes.

Well, maybe everybody that doesn't want Iggy back won't have to worry.

Bring Iggy home.

Even if there is a small chance to have the storybook ending of all storybook endings, we take that chance. Think of how iconic of an image it would be to have rugged, wrinkly and gnarled Iggy raising the Cup in the Flaming C. It would go down in league folklore and it would be probably the pinnacle of Flames history.

Iggy is a serviceable player on the PP and can contribute to a team. Have a heart people, it's not always dollars and cents.

Agreed. One of the few things I remember from his last season or two here was how frustrated I was with him slowing the game down when he had possession of the puck. That was 4-5 years ago.

They're voting with their hearts not their brains. I was at luncheon a couple of years ago and this question was asked to the flames brass. At the time they said there's no way of that happening.

You're right, it's not about dollars and cents

It's about winning hockey games, which Iggy does not help you do anymore

Has anyone actually watched Iginla this year? He can barely keep up. If his name wasn't Jarome Iginla I'd be hesitant to say he'd have a job in the NHL. He's not an upgrade on Chiasson. Yes, he's regressed that much. Storybook endings are great in Hollywood but the truth is Iginla would hurt this team more than he'd help at this point. He's too slow now. Quit thinking with your hearts.

I refuse to not think with my heart. It's fun and Iggy is my favorite.

And when Iggy wins the Cup with the Flames you can all feel shame.

I know he's not playing well but why on earth would Colorado keep playing him if it was that bad? Surely he'd be sitting some games. Avalanche management and coaching staff are not nostalgic Flames fans, they are a pro NHL team with a roster to run and games to win.

Again, Iginla was a 20+ goal scorer last season. Let's not act like he hasn't brought anything to the table for years. And Iginla will be better when he's playing legends games than Chiasson will ever be.

I'd only have him back if he JUST plays bottom 9 minutes and maybe the occasional top 6 if the teams struggles to get goals but even than I don't think he'd be much help at this age.

I'd just like him to retire as a Flame and not just the stupid Forever a Flame retirement.

It's Christmas time. If we can't think with our hearts at this time of year then the whole spirit of the season is gone.

Here is a realtime image of Flames fans fantasizing about acquiring Iginla and watching he and the team win a Stanley Cup.
Spoiler!

My guess is Iggy is going to the Oilers to finish his career. It is his home town and some how he will want to play with McDavid just like when he nix'd the trade to Boston to play with Crosby.
