Bouma has a year left. So does Stajan.
Either you trade Wideman and retain a few bucks, or you trade Smid and they retain a few bucks. Don't see much else.

If he waives his NMC, then Colorado can expose him in the expansion draft...many different scenarios can play out...I think the most likely is a one day contract with you guys, and a retirement announcement.

I'm not on board to gear up for a cup run this year, I still think this team is a couple years away; focusing more on a total quality organization rather then run-and-gun seasons.
If Iggy can come for a small price tag and without sacrificing any development time for the future of the organization, then sure.
But if it comes at the cost of young talent, be it in a trade or be it by severely limiting their ice time and growth, then no thanks. The team isn't winning the cup this year or next. Just stay the course and continue to build a solid depth organization.

If this team strings together another 11-3-1 type stretch going into February we will be hunting for that cup. If your not hunting for the cup every year then why bother??? It should be the end goal for any team every year.

You should always be looking to improve your team, but Iginla at this stage of his career doesn't do that

Like other folks, I think that if the Flames are in a playoff spot at the trade deadline they should make a move for Iggy. Go for one last run with him and let him retire as a Flame at the end of the playoffs.
I don't know if Burke/Treliving/Gulutzan would be interested in Iggy though. That move might have to come from ownership or something.

I can appreciate your opinion and I'm not saying to throw everything away if the teams playing well. You just ride the wave as long as you can without crippling the longterm goal of the team. In order to hunt for the cup every year (as you stated) the team needs to develop a quality organization as a whole.
Sure the goal every year is to win the cup, but a more longterm quality goal of being competitive and capable of winning the cup on a more consistent bases from this point on is a much smarter goal.
Longterm sustainability of high quality hockey is a much better business model then selling the farm to win the cup one year while not being able to sustain it for any amount of time.

He could be a decent short-term addition. He wouldn't hurt the team. At the very least he would be a great character builder for guys like Gaudreau, Monahan and Bennett.

You wouldn't think so, but the way they are playing right now...why not them?

I think these young guys are showing they don't need outside help to develop character. around the time Iggy left there were questions about the culture of the team. nobody can be sure what his role in that was, but it seems apparent at the very least he's not helping develop character on the Avs either.

1) Giving plum executive jobs to ex-stars is how you end up with the Oilers and Avs.
2) The last thing CalgaryNext needs is more people who don't know what they are doing when it comes to development.

This team cannot afford to do favors in such critical circumstances (playoffs) for past fan favorites. If it makes sense, sure, but he's no better than Brouwer or Frolik at this point. Let's not let nostalgia blind a playoff push.

If the flames are in a playoff spot come deadline and look like they might be able to make some noise in the playoffs, i sure hope they bring in a better player than Iggy. Sorry to some posters that think they should bring him back. Iggy is near done. He is slow as hell and is only really good on the PP. I can't see him being able to keep up with any of the players on the top 9.

The Flames look like a contender right now. Bring him back for a 7th rounder. Even if it's for the story. It never hurts to have more depth because wingers will get injured down the stretch and in the playoffs. Id rather Iginla step in than Shinkaruk

If the Flames do give Jarome a front office job, I hope his business card would read
"Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla
Special Assistant to the Assistant General Manager Craig Conroy"
But in all seriousness, there may be better use of cap space and assets at the trade deadline than Iginla.
If Iginla is the best option and he is willing to come here, that is one thing. But if there are legitimate other options that would better playoff chances and performance, I would hope the Flames pursue them first.
