One last stat line I looked up:
Since the 1-0 win in Minnesota Nov 15, Chad Johnson is:- 1st in wins (11),
- 1st in Sv% (.946%),
- 2nd in GAA (1.61, Raanta has 1.58)
- 1st in shutouts (3)

I love how Gulutzan has this team working on the forecheck. I haven't seen a forecheck this good since... probably Darryl Sutter coaching. I remember Brent Sutter started to get an aggressive forecheck going for a bit, but it didn't last long (don't think the Flames at that time had the legs to run it).
Remember last month when this team looked slow? This team is playing with speed now. I was cringing at how slow they looked to start, but this team can compete with any team in the NHL in terms of speed now.
Funny thing I noticed - At the start of the game, they mentioned Laine got moved down to the 2nd line because he wasn't strong enough defensively, and the moved Wheeler up into his spot alongside Scheifele and Ehlers. That entire line goes -3, while Laine (with exactly 59 seconds less TOI less than Wheeler) finishes the night even. I just thought that was kind of funny (though Laine does have a lot of work to do on his defensive game).
I didn't think I would like Hathaway this much. He is really Niemennen. He really gets under everyone's skin, and it isn't like he is some talentless plug out there either. Man, this Flames team is looking like a polished playoff-ready team, and I don't think I have said this about them for a good 8 or 9 years (even the years they made the playoffs). They are just doing so many things right.
Feel bad for Johnson - he earned that shutout. Terrible overconfident PK attacking like that (though good job by Wideman in getting back), and then that last fluke goal.
That forecheck... I love it.
|
In regards to Hathaway: if he gets sent down I will be royally pissed. He has earned a roster spot, AND a spot in the line up. Something tells me we haven't seen his best hockey yet!
In regards to Johnsons potential shutout tonight: I was very upset at the PK with how we ended the game. Once you reach the
50m mark with a 5-0 lead the top priority is getting your goalie the shutout. Gambling on a 3-1 was brainless.
Even worse is stopping effort in the last 10s.
At least GG has a point of focus on Tuesday morning.

GG has some options based on game situations (I.e. Up a goal, down a goal, toughness and size, defence, offence, speed).
There might not actually be a right answer to my question.
By no means do I think this team is a cup contender, but I think this team nearly has Stanley Cup depth.
Once we see how the Expansion draft plays out, are able to drop off some contracts that aren't so great, and round out the defence, this team is BUILT.
I am saying right now that there is no reason why the Flames shouldn't be a favourite for the cup in 2018.

Great teams don't really have a first line. Having three separate potential top lines make it possible for someone to get a good matchup. Teams usually only have 3 or 4 good defenders (some less), and have a couple filler guys in their bottom pairing. If you have three lines that are dangerous, that forces the other team to either overplay their top 4 d-men and limit the exposure of the 3rd pairing, or you'll get great chances against those inferior players.
Plus you don't need to rely on "Iginla" or "Gaudreau" alone to win the game. If the star gets shut down, there is a whole list of other guys who are right there to put the puck in. This may be the deepest team in a decade, which in and of itself is sad considering the team still could use a legit scoring RW and a #4 defenseman.

Hello guys!
So happy after this game again! Today for one more reason. I met one 16 year old boy here from Hodonin, fan of Flames, back in this summer. He wore a Flames cap, I was an announcer of big festivities in here, spotted his cap from the podium, went to talk to him after :-)In touch with him since then, he has no chance to watch Flames games live like I do, so I invited him for today, for this game. So he came to my place at 0400am,and was so happy to witness this perfect game! Asked me after the game, If I will invite him in the future again :-) Was nice to hear, I saw myself in his age, I would be out of this world if somebody invited me fo a Flames game. So I told him sure, of course, no problem! Was really happy for him!
I think he was more than happy that I invited him, good to see! Wanted to see some pics from CGY from my 2 stays etc. So I showed him many pics and some videos from my stay in CGY in 2011 and 2014. I must take care of this young Flames fan here in Hodonin I guess :-)
Flames are playing beyond awesome hockey as of late! Keep it up boys!!!!!
Greetings from Czech republic to lovely Calgary!

Fantastic game by the Flames. I was never worried when the Jets got in the zone. The dzone coverage has been outstanding.
I love having balanced scoring from all 4 lines. Also with Dougie taking the mantle of best dman on the team (along with the Chad), we're in really good shape.
Go Flames Go!

Just now back from the game. Was getting greedy in hoping for a shutout and also a D Hamilton hat trick.
I won't be picky! The Flames kicked ass. There is no doubt about the turnaround. All of a sudden we are a team to be reckoned. Let's keep it rolling.

- Flames won 8 games in a row between 2005-11-01 and 2005-11-16, but it went Kipper x4, Sauve (?!), Kipper x3.
- Another 8 game winning streak between 1992-12-14 and 1993-01-02. Vernon won all 8 games.
- Cup winning team won 8 in a row between 1989-01-31 and 1989-02-15. Vernon and Wamsley split the wins.
- Cup winning team also won 7 in a row between 1988-11-10 and 1988-11-26. Vernon and Wamsley split the wins.
- Flames won 7 in a row between 1986-11-01 and 1986-11-13 as well. Vernon won all 7 again.
- Atlanta won 10 in a row between 1978-10-14 and 1978-11-03 with Dan Bouchard winning all 10!
Would love to see a Calgary kid tie Vernon for the Calgary Flames record!

After such a bad start to the season, this team starting to look like it's a playoff team. Lots more hockey to go. But things are feeling pretty good right now!
